I kept walking past my area jeweler and saw the sign the said "we buy gold". This week I decided to give it a try figuring I had nothing to lose. I am over 50 and had quite the accumulation of mismatched earrings, HS ring, broken chains....you get the idea, junk that sits in the bottom of your drawer because you figure it isn't worth getting fixed. Well, I went in expecting to get maybe 200 - 300...........walked out with $1600 :jaw:

All I can say is D&B 40th Anniversary Bag here I come!!

I also went to a local place and walked out w/ $300 for a bracelet, hs ring, some earrings. Just a small handful and got $300.00. I wish I had some more to sell. :)

Getting rid of old junk jewelry was how I bought my park pass last year. Just make sure you go to a couple of different jewelers to see which will give you the best price. When we buy it where I work, it depends on the price of gold that day so it can vary from day to day.

Keep in mind that all gold is not equal. Pure gold is 24 karat while 18, 14 and 10 karat gold is an alloy. 18 karat is 75% gold, 14 karat is 58% gold and 10 karat is 42% gold. Jewelry will have the karat marked on it somewhere. A very thin 10 karat chain will have little gold value.
Also be aware the jeweler is in business to make money, so he buys at say 10% under value and sells at 10% over to do this. That's why it's good to shop area.
Never mail your gold to someone unless you want to get ripped off.
