My DH and I have a trip booked 11/17-23 of this year. It will be DH's first trip to WDW (he grew up going to DLR) and I want to make it extra special. His birthday is December 1st and I think I want to get a special AK tour for him. Growing up in San Diego he loves zoos and animal interaction (he's run away and be a vet if he could face that much more school).

I'm considering the Wild Africa Trek or the Backstage Safari. Right now leaning towards the Backstage Safari. If you have done this before, please let me know your thoughts. What do you do? If it worth the money? Which one is better? Any information is greatly appreciated!

I haven't done the Wild Africa Trek (although it's on my list of things to try next time), but my last trip I did the Backstage Safari. My boyfriend and I both loved it. It was the two of us and another couple (this was in August. My parents went in May and had the same experience, the two of them and one other couple.) and the guide. We were taken through a number of backstage areas, got to see where they put together the food for the animals and learn about how they organize that, we saw the night barns for the elephants and the white rhinos and got to see one of the rhino handlers feed the rhino. We got to go "on stage" at Rafiki's Planet Watch when we walked through the veterinary exam rooms that you can see through the glass when you're visiting. We met a goat who was having his teeth cleaned. He'd had anesthesia so he was walking aroudn a little unsteadily. There's a break with snacks provided and travel mugs with the Backstage Safari logo on them (quick tip, if you're wearing sunscreen, don't touch the logo). Then there's a "private" safari to round out your tour. Basically the tour group jumps onto a safari vehicle and takes a slower paced ride through Kilamanjaro without the ride soundtrack and the guide and driver just talk about the animals and the grounds.

It was a really great experience. I would definitely recommend it!

Thanks for your review! It sounds great and definitely what DH would love. I'm glad the group is small too. I guess that depends on the day, but hopefully we can have a small group too :mickey:
