Uh, they are playing the Predators David. Just gotta ask - how can you not know who your team is playing? And why aren't you a 'Stinkin' Panthers' fan? Man, we hate the Stinkin' Panthers!

They are literally a continent away, I NEVER get to see them play so I can't always catch up on what is going on with them. I used to be really into hockey a few years ago but it lowered as they weren't doing so good after they got rid of some of my favorite players like Giguere and others...

We had Panthers tickets for a few years where we'd go every game. I can't say that I'm a fan of them, but it was nice going every once in awhile. Hockey games are SO much better in person than TV, the one and only sport I can say that definitively.

I'll take my hockey however I can get it. Baseball, on the other hand, has to be watched in person. I don't care for watching it on tv.

Diehard Pens fan here (even growing the playoff beard), but I think Tampa Bay will prevail. Stamkos and St. Louis are hot. I tend to think goaltending may be the difference. The Pens defense is the best in years and if Fleury can shutdown Tampa Bay that could be big. Of course there is also the Crosby factor. Will he come back? My hunch is not in this series. He is not even practicing with contact yet.

Down here watching baseball live is a good place to sleep for three hours. There are like ten other people with you in the stadium...yet they are building a brand new stadium for a team that trades all of their good players and keeps a ten million dollar payroll year after year...which is why they have hardly any fans. Blows my mind...

Flyers are in, but I have no clue what to make of their chances. They were arguably one of the hottest teams in the NHL for the first like 3/4 of the season and then they just went in the tank.

Can they crank it up for the playoffs? No clue ... odds are against them, though. Top seeds haven't fared well in recent years when it comes to the NHL playoffs.

I think I'm leaning towards a first round upset.

Melanie

Stamkos and St. Louis are hot.

Correction, Vinny LeCavalier and Marty are hot. Stammer, not so much. Talk about an epic breakdown. 40 or so goals at the All-Star break, finishes with 45. Definitely in a major funk! But then again, he's Steven Stamkos and he is incredible regardless.

My hubby thinks Crosby will be back this series, but if he isn't even practicing with contact yet, then yeah, that's doubtful. Surely Pens fans will all make a big deal of the Hedman hit, even though that wasn't even the big one. It just did him in when he probably shouldn't have been out there to begin with.

So, first intermission and no score. Fluery had an awesome save!

Thats because Fleury was pretty sweet in goal last night !!!!!!! :D

There were lots of no calls last night, went both ways.

The earliest I think Sid may appear would be a game 6 situation. I dont't know why, I see the videos of him practicing and he is flying on the ice and he didnt lose a step in puck handling.

Hungry and MAD! I hate I didn't get to see the game (I was at Epcot), but my son and I were keeping tabs and high-5ing after every goal. I'm sure we were getting some looks. :D

I'm still just astonished on how Stammer has disappeared and the old guys are making their presence known. If only he'd wake up! But regardless, what Guy Boucher and Stevie Y have done in only one year is incredible.

And a loss I did see. And I will say it was no fun from start to finish. This is how we all felt -----> :bang: Extremely nerve-wracking and frustrating playing from behind the entire game. So glad Marty St. Louis and Dwayne Roloson realized there was a game last night, or it would have been downright ugly. I had a sinking feeling after their 3rd goal immediately after Marty tied it up.

I'm baffled, confused, whatever on where the heck Steven Stamkos has disappeared to and that in itself is probably the most frustrating thing of all to me. It's like he's a complete non-factor. :(

That all said, the Forum was rocking and fan support was great! This is big for Tampa. The Pittsburgh fans were really a non-factor, thank goodness! There were just a few scattered here and there. I did see a fight though. But all the things the new owner has done are incredible and there is more to come in the offseason. We love you Mr. Vinik! Thank you for a great season regardless of the outcome of this series. What a turnaround from last year!

I dont know if its nerves or inexperience but Stamkos really hasnt done much. Vinnie and Marty though are being a real pest though !!!

You guys are lucky that we cant seem to find the net. I think Staal and Neal are having a who can miss more nets competition.

I do have a feeling there is going to be one game suspensions handed out for both sides after last nights hits by Downie and Kunitz. I would be surprised if only one gets it, and if neither gets will I will be blown away.

Win or loss the series, Tampa Bay is going in the right direction. Plus its something to build on for next year. Those noise makers look interesting last night though !!

I should say defensively I thought both teams played well. We had the chances last night offensively, but just couldn't convert.

I need to go back and watch the hits by Downie and Kunitz. Hard to tell when you are there. Sigh - Downie has done so well this year keeping his temper in check (all attributed to Boucher for sure!). Boy what a hothead and loose cannon he was last year. Yes, fighting is a part of hockey, but you can't score points from the penalty box. I also want to go back and see that hit by Vinny. I get this feeling it was a ticky-tac call. Let's see, I'm going to turn on NHL on the Fly now. ;)

Those rally drums were awesome! Loved them. They were loud and everyone got into it. Don't count on it being as loud Wednesday, as they are giving out thunder sticks instead. Big mistake!

ETA: Something I heard our announcers mention last night on my drive home is that whoever scores first in this series will likely win and I agree. Momentum seems to be a huge factor!

Interesting commentary on NHL network on the hits. Panel was split on whether Downie should be suspended. Yes, he left his feet and yes he has a (bad) history. Time will tell.

Unanimous on Kunitz that he's gone for 3 games. Blantant elbow and cheap shot for sure. And Gagne has the history of concussions.

I dont know how they could be split on Downie, Lovejoy didnt have the puck and his skates left the ice, to me thats a no brainer.

3 games for Kunitz I think is a bit much, he isnt a dirty player and doesnt have a history for such things. What makes it look worse was it was Gagne and his history. I am sure if it was reversed and it was Crosby we would be calling for heads.

I think 1 game each, fine, and warning of do it again and you are out for the series.

My biggest problem with the NHL is there is no consistency. Cooke gets suspended rest of season and first round of playoffs. Lucic cross checks a guy in the back of the head no suspension at all??? Chara nearly ends a guys career and no suspension. Is it because Colin Campbells son plays for the Bruins...maybe

There needs to be a rule that ANY hit to the head results in automatic suspension, but the NHL is too afraid to put it in place.

Melanie

I'd have to see it again, but they were saying that Downie is 5'9" and Lovejoy is 6'3" (I think) and that it wasn't a head shot.

I can understand, the guy that hit Crosby got nothing. I am not talking about Hedman either, his hit isnt what caused his concussion. He had to have it from the Steckle hit during the Winter Classic

Right, right. True enough, he did not. And like I said earlier, I too believe Hedman's hit was not the cause of Crosby's issues. He really shouldn't have been on the ice at all. And I don't say that because I dig Hedman. ;) We met him last year and he's a gentle giant. Love him! I'm just ready for him to grow into his role. I'm still learning all there is about hockey, but it's my understanding defensemen take more time to develop? I'm just impatient!

And although I'm new to hockey, I'm a lifelong sports fan. Definitely one of the things my hubby and I had in common when we met. I just grew up on Tobacco Road where college basketball is king. :D Hockey, what's hockey? ;)

Steckel didn't deserve anything it was an accidental collision between the 2 players. It was not a hit so therefore how could it be illegal  If you want to blame anyone for Crosby's current situation the blame falls on himself trying to come back too soon and the Pens Organization for letting him play. In general I guess you can blame Bettman for trying to speed up the game after the lockout. I really can't see how they are going to eliminate concussions or even minimize them without totally changing the rules and equipment.

We went the year the stadium was built. It didn't look finished outside but was very nice inside. When we pulled up and I saw we had to park in a multi level parking garage I wasn't too sure about getting out, but it was a piece of cake. They had everything moving so smooth. They blocked off streets right after the game making them one ways and we were out of there in 10 mins!

You take your life in your own hands in Philly. If you have to cross the street your lucky if you don't get hit by a car. If you park VIP you have to be a race car driver not to be stuck in traffic for an hour after the game. My husband would get me so nervous with all of the weaving and cutting I would just close my eyes until we were back on the bridge. :(

The Forum is nice, and the new owner has plans for upgrades (all new seats, new organ, outdoor upper level margarita deck-something you can only do in Florida-etc.) during the offseason.

How old is the arena the Flyers play in?

I have never parked VIP but yea, you definitely get stuck in traffic at every event in the complex unless you know a few tricks/secret exits. The thing with Philly is, all of our major sporting arenas are in one area- The Flyers and Sixers play at the Wells Fargo Center (previously the Wachovia Center/First Union Center/CoreStates Center). The Eagles are across the street at Lincoln Financial Field and the Phillies are across the other street at Citizen's Bank Park. Up until recently there were still events going on at the old Spectrum. I was there once when there was a Flyers game, Eagles game, Phillies game, and a concert all going on the same day. That was not fun! I will say though that I feel life as a pedestrian has gotten better in my opinion over the years. I probably go to 30+ events a year these days between my Phillies season ticket plan and other games/events, and I used to be a season ticket holder for the AHL Phantoms who played at the Spectrum, and I would say at 99% of events there are traffic cops at the major intersections. If you have to cut across the middle of the street that can still be touch and go. But yes, the grid lock when you are trying to leave can be terrible. The worst was after a Bruce Springsteen show at the Spectrum. Took us an hour to get out of the lot because one of the exits was closed.

We owned season tickets to the Flyers for 12 years. We were at the complex on many occassions when multiple events were going on. We gave up our tickets a few years ago but from what we experienced for years back then is that the traffic cops Never directed any traffic at all. They just stood there and did nothing. We saw so many people almost get hit by cars and many many fender benders just coming out of a parking lot.

We didn't know any better until we went to Tampa and DC and saw what they did and how much better and safer it was.

What blew my mind was that knewing how bad it is there the city or the teams (I don't know who is resonsible) never bothered to come up with a solution to the traffic problem. It was just every man for himself. :ambal:

Hurricane Crosby warning in effect for Tampa. I think we just might see him tonight since every has been hush hush on who's playing tonight since Kunitz is out for a game.

Melanie funny story about Tampa Bay for ya.

One of my friends is a Pens season ticket holder and I go to some of the games with him. I was at both games when the Pens played TB here. The game back in November the row infront of us had a group of ten people from Tampa Bay. So we asked them how they got their seats, and the responded they won them in an auction. The package was airfare, hotel, and games in both D.C. and Pittsburgh. So we were <chatting> with them and we were asking them about this guy with the last name Rittola. They told us he was with their AHL team and a little bit about him.

Well during the game he made a mistake and my friend busts out Riiiiiiiiitooooooolaaaa, sounding just like the Ricola commericals. I have never seen anyone laugh soo hard about an opposing team getting on one of their players. They were like we need to remember that for when he scores a goal and we can scream it !!! I told them they need to have the horn sound with it :D

I also saw he was called up today !!

The game back in November the row infront of us had a group of ten people from Tampa Bay. So we asked them how they got their seats, and the responded they won them in an auction. The package was airfare, hotel, and games in both D.C. and Pittsburgh. So we were BS'n with them and we were asking them about this guy with the last name Rittola.

Eh, to be honest, I'm not that worried if Cindy does play tonight. To me, he's been out so long, it will be unlikely he'd come back guns blazing. But huh, what do I know?

The Rittola/Ricola story is cute! I've seen some fans post it on the Bolts FB page, but I've never heard anyone do it at a game. Of course, I've probably never been there when he scored. ;)

Okay so the only thing I'll say about last night's Flyers game is that A. the Flyers would have won if they could actually manage a quality shot on net. They made Miller look like a hero, but really ... how hard is it to stop shots when you hardly have to move and they're consistently hitting you square in the numbers. B. If that "elbow" by Richards truly warranted a five minute major I'm going to give up on hockey forever. That was one of the worst calls I've ever seen.

Ian
04-25-2011, 09:23 AM
I know ... I heard a guy on the radio the other day talking about how the Flyers haven't had a great (i.e. Vezina candidate) goaltender in twenty years and at first I was like, "Oh come on! Stop being so dramatic!"

But then I really thought about it and realized the guy was right! We've had a parade of average to below average through here that's pretty stunning if you think about it.

Maybe ... just maybe ... this year's playoffs will make the Flyers realize they're going to have to go out and find a true, Stanley Cup caliber goalie if they honestly want to be contenders. It's almost like the Phillies 4 years ago. They had a young team with a prolific offense, but terrible pitching and you just can't win without great pitching in baseball.

The last decent goalie I can remember you guys having was Ron Hextall.Yep and that was 20 years ago ... or more!

They must have just horrific in house scouting for goalies or something. You'd think they would have, purely by accident, drafted a guy by now who turned out to be a player!

We've had so many young goalies through here, too. Jean-Marc Pelletier, Nittymaki, Cechmanek, Esche, Ouellet ... not one of them panned out into anything. And then we've had the parade of old, washed-up stiffs like Vanbiesbrouck and Garth Snow and Sean Burke. Painful!!

Ian, here is the problem. As you said in the NBA thread, the Sixers aren't going to be competitative for a decade due to bad contracts and the like. While I do not agree it will not take that long (depends on what is in the new CBA for the NBA). Same people who own the Sixers own the Flyers. While Snider cares more about hockey, the higher ups who control the purse strings aren't going to give him the extra money to give him the goalie you want or the superstar I want for the Sixers.

The Flyers have always spent, but the problem is they don't have a ton of cap space to work with. Also, great free agent goalies don't come up very often. You really need to draft goalies in the NHL. That's how you get the great ones.

Losing in the playoffs a couple of years removed from a Cup doesn't crush the hopes and dreams of a fanbase.

Not winning one for 36 years does. :razz:Baloney. I think they hurt worse when the expectations are there. I know, for example, that the Phils losing in the playoffs the last two season hurt much worse than it did in 2007 before their Series win. The more you expect, the more it stings when your team fails to deliver. I flat out refuse to believe that any real Penguins fan wouldn't be devastated by a first round playoff exit.

Shouldnt you be worried about tonight? Not particularly worried. I think the Bruins had their shot to ice the series on Sunday and failed to close it out. Anything can happen and goodness knows the Flyers goalie situation makes that doubly true, but if you've watched any of this series the Flyers have been the better team for the vast majority of the playing time. Barring two meltdowns by their goalies, this series would have been settled in the Flyers favor two games ago.

I like their chances. Although I'll be quite honest and say I do not like their chances after this round unless Boucher gets his head back on straight. You can fudge your way through the first round with this goalie carousel, but once we're up against the better competition in the semis not so much.

I flat out refuse to believe that any real Penguins fan wouldn't be devastated by a first round playoff exit.

Especially by a TB Lightning team who really had done nothing since their Stanley Cup year, and who thankfully cleaned house in the offseason.

Will I be disappointed if TB loses tomorrow night? Sure! But devastated and crushed? I don't think so, and I still consider myself a true fan.

I love this quote from Yzerman at his intro press conference:

"There is no easy fix. I don't sit up here with the notion that there is a magic wand I can wave and make changes and we're a Stanley Cup contender. I plan on making the Lightning better for the upcoming season, but the long-term goal is to make this team a perennial contender."

You sure did a heck of a job in such a short time, Stevie Y, and reflecting on what he said here makes me so happy for what the organization has accomplished this year. It's amazing what happens when the players respect the ownership and management.

I had to giggle at that penalty shot. That kid has to be embarrassed.

1-30 in power plays for the series. I'd say that's an issue, but it's also good PK on TB's part. And Rollie is playing lights out. That's 3 stop sequence last night was amazing. Fluery, he's rattled a bit. No doubt about that.

The Sabres won 20 ot of their last 24 games.

Seeding in the NHL means little because the teams are so evenly matched. There was only a 4 win difference between the Sabres and Flyers, same with the 1 and 8 seeds in both conferences. Which is why it is not uncommon to see upsets in the NHL playoffs.

Although I'd submit it's been since Hextall who was a pretty darn good goalie. Won a Conn Smythe, if memory serves.

Agreed there, I forgot all about Hexy. Yep, the year they lost to the Oilers ('87) he won the Conn Smythe. He was a Vezina winner too I think.
Plus, he was fun to watch between scoring goals, fights, and coming out to pummel Chelios in retaliation for the Propp hit in the playoffs. :D

You won't have to worry about the Flyers, that series is pretty much over. I can hear the tears and excuses coming from across the state now :DI, for one, am not making any excuses for this team. They've played a pathetic series against the Bruins. No energy, no heart, no real effort. They're playing like a team that thinks they won the Cup by beating the Sabres.

And really as much as I love Laviolette, I think he's made some fundamental mistakes with how he's managed the goalies. He bailed on Bobrovsky too quickly, if you ask me and now he's left with no appealing options. If Bob's the goalie of the future, he should have stuck with him throughout the playoffs, got him the experience, and dealt with the results.

Also, I'm basically of the opinion that Mike Richards is worthless.

Edited to add - Congrats to the Lightning, Mel!! Good luck with the B's in the FInals!

I am not a big NHL person, but being from Tampa, I was overjoyed at the Lightning's Cup crusade in 2004 (wow, has it been that long?) and saddened that a work stoppage derailed their quest for a repeat.

So, happiness now that they are finally reclimbing that mountain. Even if they fail to reach the summit, they have acquitted themselves nicely.

Well Done, Tampa!

Actually of all the four major sports around here I'd say Flyers fans are the ones LEAST likely to make excuses. Flyers fans are quick to point out flaws in the team/coach/whomever. I can admit that for the most part they played an abysmal series.

next round would be nice to have my buddy come back home for at least 2 games. Ryan Kesler has been the heart and soul of that team!

It's weird to see a friend playing in the big leagues.... Not only that, but gracing the cover of hockey video game and having the announcers talk about how he (kesler) was carrying an NHL team on his back!

Wow times have changed since he was a kid playing roller hockey with us in the school parking lots....

But i have to say, the Wings will win out for support if they do in fact play the Canucks lol

Detroit - Tampa would be cool to see... I would love to see Stevie Y. take on his former team for Lord Stanley!

maybe if the lightning didnt give out plastic clappers that they turned into hard projectiles *cough krejci nailed in the head cough* they wouldnt have to worry about tempers. i just dont see how you would want to win with horton sitting on the bench just like burrows shouldnt be suspended because we wont hear the end of it....

It would seem some "not so nice" people showed up with all the riot tools on them, right down to the gas masks. Obviously they would have started something either way. Sigh.
