Day Four--Tuesday, December 21st--Part 1

After the disastrous morning at HS yesterday, we weren't sure what to do this morning. We knew we had two full days left and that we wanted to go back to MK in the morning on one of those days, but we weren't sure if we should also try and visit AK. I had never been to AK, and neither had DH, but I jumped on Intercot the night before and, thanks to all you wonderful friends, we were advised that most kids LOVE AK, so we should give it a shot.

We decided to get to AK as close to opening as we could, since the crowds were beginning to mount for Christmas. So, we woke up at 6:30 and got showered and ready, grabbed a quick breakfast and coffee in the lounge (and restocked our DS's snack bag with Fruit Loops and Goldfish) and then headed to the bus stop. I had my first "I hate Disney transportation" moment. We were one of four families at the bus stop, and all of us sat there while three Studios and one Downtown Disney bus came through. Finally, almost 20 minutes after getting to the stop, an AK bus pulled up. The driver first stopped at the Grand Flo and then took us some crazy back way through the CM entrance and finally dropped us off at the gates to AK, right around 8:30.

I race walked back to Africa and grabbed FPs for the safari while DS and DH strolled over. DS decided that he does not like to ride in his stroller unless absolutely exhausted, so for most of the trip, he pushed it, and it served as our rolling luggage cart. Today was no exception. Still, by the time DH and DS reached me, the stand-by wait for the safari was only 5 minutes, so we jumped in line. It was a great ride! As we learned later, the driver really does make all the difference. We saw TONS of animals, and our driver was really into the story line and drove sort of crazy (which our son loved) in several parts. We all loved the ride!

We walked through the exploration trail and saw the gorillas, fish and other animals and then went back with our FPs to the safari. This time, our driver was much more subdued, and we saw totally different animals. We enjoyed this one, too, but we agreed the first driver blew this one away. Once we returned from that trip, I grabbed a cinnamon roll at the bakery (I'd only been able to get a cup of coffee in the lounge), and DH and I gobbled it up. Then, we decided to take DS on the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch. We rode the train over and back (we decided that there wasn't anything there that really piqued our interest), and then we made our way back to the front of the park, with the intention of stopping at Camp Minnie Mickey. However, we had 12:00 ADRs at Whispering Canyons, and DH wisely decided that, since it was 11:00, it probably made sense to go back to the bus stop, since we'd have to wait.

We arrived at the bus stop and waited about 10 minutes for a bus to the Lodge. We didn't realize that bus also stopped at Blizzard Beach. Of course, since it was only about 60 degrees outside, no one was waiting on us at that stop (we were the only family on the bus the entire time), and we finally pulled up at the Wilderness Lodge about 11:45.

Day 4--Part 2

Since we had a few minutes before our lunch ADR, we decided to explore Wilderness Lodge. I was pleasantly surprised. The Christmas decorations were just beautiful (DS LOVED the giant Christmas tree in the lobby), and one of the very nice CMs took our picture in front of it. We also loved the little stream through the lobby, and we walked back to the villas and saw the decorations and Walt's train cars back there. We were all impressed with how quiet the resort was, even with Whispering Canyons. My DH decided that he has to stay here, and we actually just booked an April trip for my birthday here.

We checked in at the podium for our ADRs, and DS had fun playing with the little Lincoln logs for a few minutes before our pager went off. Then, we were escorted to our table. I was pretty nervous after I heard about all the crazy antics here, but I realized that if you don't want to "play," the staff will leave you alone, and if you do want to "play," it's all good fun, not harassment! DH ordered the pulled pork sandwich and house salad, and I had a cup of the chicken chili. DS had the grilled chicken kids meal. All were good, and I think the bill was about $45. We'd give it a solid B+.

After lunch, we took the boat to the MK, rode the carousel and then staked out a spot for the Christmas parade (which DS just loved). Once the parade was over, we went back to the Poly for some snacks and then appetizers. Tonight's offerings were pork skewers, baked brie bites, coconut and strawberry soup, and the standard cheeses, fruits and veggies. I thought it was all good, and we all ate enough to be satisfied, especially after our big lunch. We took the monorail back to the MK to let our son see the Christmas lights, and we rode the train around the loop. On the way into the park, I had seen a little boy with a plush Wall-E, so after our train ride, we went to Tomorrowland and did a little shopping and finally found our Wall-E. We also picked up a little monorail car and train engine. Purchases made, we decided to head back "home" to the Poly for the night.

On our way back, we encountered a particularly "know it all" woman on the monorail, who decided that it was her business to tell us all what we should and shouldn't do at Disney. She really thought we needed some parenting tips, for some reason. I'm sure she meant well, but she really got on DH's nerves. It made him a little grouchy. Fortunately, all was remedied when we got back to the Poly, and DH was able to get some take out sushi at the Kona sushi bar (we really love the citrus hamachi rolls). DS was pretty much asleep on his feet, so we gave him a quick bath and then put him to bed. Then, I went to the lounge and discovered peanut butter mousse cups (DH loves peanut butter) and some chocolate ganach tarts. We had those with some decaf lattes in our room and really enjoyed just being in Disney at our favorite resort. It was a nice end to a fun day.

The Animal Kingdom is a great way to spend a morning - so glad you made the decision to go over there!

With the exception of Miss Busy-Body feeling the need to impart her wisdom on you, it sounds like you had a delightful afternoon and evening. Happy to hear you found Wall-E! :mickey:

Thanks for reading everyone! The woman on the monorail meant well, I'm sure, but she was really a know it all. First, she lectured this man and his teenaged son who'd asked one of the CMs about sitting up front in the monorail about how they should have known that wasn't allowed anymore. Then, as we pulled into one of the stations, she told my DH and me that we needed to keep a better eye on our son. I was really perplexed by this, because he was in his stroller, which was pulled right in between DH and me, and I was sitting down talking to him the entire time. The only thing I can figure is that she thought that since DS had his hands up in the air at one point, reaching for his dad, she thought he was going to get his fingers stuck in the door. I'm really not sure how she thought that was possible, since DH was standing right next to the door, and DS was a good 2 feet away from it, but that's all I can figure. I think DH was just really offended by her, because we go out of our way to ensure our son is well-behaved (DH is a teacher, and one of his pet-peeves is kids who have ill manners and are disrespectful). I sort of blew her off, though, and thought that if she had nothing better to do at Disney than to give random people lectures, she must have been a really miserable person!

Another great day! We enjoy starting our day at AK and finishing it off at MK or Epcot. What a strange woman you encountered, glad she wasn't able to ruin the magic!
