The Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys have played home games on Thanksgiving since 1934 and 1966, respectively, in a series called the Thanksgiving Classic.

according to John madden

back in the day after the cowboys joined the league, i think he said the owner was tex shram, no body wanted to play on thanksgiving. So Tex said the cowboys would take it, but that if they took it then they get it every year, and they are the home team. In case it became popular and everyone wanted it, he wanted the right for the boys to have it. I did not hear why the lions get it but i imagine it was a similar deal. By the way, Madden can be heard on satelite radio...
