You will not get your room assignment until you actually receive your packet at the checkin desk. Hotels do not give out actual room numbers until you get the key. That ensures that the person entering the room is the one who actually paid for it. Trust me as a hotelier, do it any other way and scammers and thieves would get there first. So, it's both for your safety and hotel security.
