Aug. 23, 1912 – Animator and layout artist Ed Benedict (best known for his work with Hanna-Barbera) was born. Benedict would begin his animation career in 1930 at Walt Disney Studios and work on “Make Mine Music.” He would leave in 1933 to work at Universal Studios as an animator on Walter Lantz’s “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” shorts.
Aug. 23, 1929 – Actress Vera Miles, who appeared in the Disney live-action features “Follow Me!” “Boys,” and “Those Calloways,” was born in Oklahoma.
Aug. 23, 1942 – Actor, choreographer, and director Lee Roy Reams was born in Covington, Ky. In 1995 he played the role of Lumiere in Disney’s Broadway show “Beauty and the Beast.”
Aug. 23, 1953 – The newspaper article “Vacation Ducky for Donald’s ‘Ghost’ Arkansas Visitor” appeared in this day’s Arkansas Gazette. (The story centered on Disney cartoonist Al Taliaferro who was on a working vacation with his wife and children at Tanglewood Acres.)
Aug. 23, 1962 – Curtis Wong, a member of the 1977 – 1978 TV show “The New Mouseketeers,” was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Aug. 23, 1965 – Disney’s “Mary Poppins” was released in Sweden.
Aug. 23, 1986 – The U.S. Senate passed a bill, Public Law 99-391, designating December 5, 1986 as “Walt Disney Recognition Day.”
Aug. 23, 1990 – The updated versions of the Mickey Mouse Club cartoon “You – and Your Five Senses,” “You – and Your Food” “You-The Human Animal,” “You- the Living Machine” were released.
Aug. 23, 1991 – The Disney/Touchstone Picture film “True Identity” was released.
