May 21, 1914 – John Hubley, an animator and animation director, was born in Marinette, Wi. In 1935, he would get a job as a background and layout artist at Disney, where he would work on such classic films as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Pinocchio,” “Dumbo” and “Bambi,” as well as “The Rite of Spring” segment from “Fantasia.” He would leave Disney in 1941 and 8-years later helped create the cartoon character Mr. Magoo.
May 21, 1918 – Singer Dennis Day was born in The Bronx, N.Y. (He can be heard in Disney’s 1948 feature “Melody Time.”)
May 21, 1928 – Walt Disney’s trademark application for “Mickey Mouse” was filed with the United States Patent Office.
May 21, 1933 – A 23-year old artist named Wolfgang Reitherman was hired at the Disney Studio in Hollywood, Ca. (“Woolie” as he would be nicknamed, would start work in June and go on to become one of Walt’s legendary Nine Old Men.)
May 21, 1934 – Disney comic illustrator Luciano Gatto was born in Venice, Italy.
May 21, 1940 – Walter E. Disney, of Los Angeles, received patent #2,201,689 from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, for the art of animation. It is for a multi-plane camera that allows for a more realistic three dimensional image as well as depth and richness to the animation.
May 21, 1940 – Disney’s “Pinocchio” was generally released in the U.K.
May 21, 1943 – Walt Disney wrote to painter/illustrator Norman Rockwell, thanking him for the painting of The Saturday Evening Post cover (dated Mar. 1, 1941). (Walt told him that members of the Disney staff have been trooping up to his office to admire the gift. “To all of them,” Walt writes, you are some sort of god.” Rockwell is enjoying a broad popular appeal in the United States as he is famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life scenarios he creates for The Saturday Evening Post magazine.
May 21, 1948 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Donald’s Dream Voice” was released.
May 21, 1954 – The Disney cartoon “Pigs is Pigs” was released.
