Is anyone still running the Insomnia Club around here?

It's been the better part of a week for me every single night...

Come on brain - it's time to shut down and recharge... I'll go try again... Nite all...

Somebody start the coffee if you are going to stay up. Thanks.

I don't have insomnia, but I only sleep about 4 hours a night. My problem is when I wake up, no matter how long I slept, my brain goes into wake mode and fires on all synapses. That is the end of being able to go back to sleep.

Have you tried melatonin? I used to have the same issues as BigRedDad and Ed. I'd wake up at 2 and feel like I just woke from a nap. My doctor suggested it and within a week I was back to a normal sleep pattern. :)

DS8 is now taking it to help him get to sleep and stay asleep. His bedtime is 8:30 and he would still be awake when we would go to bed at 11. Since he has started taking it, he is a completely different child!!! :D

It's truly a great thing if you want to give it a try!!!

I don't have a true insomnia but I can't sleep at night and definately not in my bed. I work steady nights, 3 -12 hr shifts a week. I sleep just fine during the day in my recliner. On my nights off, I still want to stay up all night and sleep during the day. Annoys my family...

Have you tried melatonin?
It leaves an awful after taste in my mouth the next morning.
I have been waking up between 3:00 am and 3:45 am for well over a year now. Even on prescription sleeping pills, which I don't take every night, I wake up during that time period. The only time I didn't was when we were on vacation. It is not noises as no one else wakes up. I also don't usually fall asleep until midnight or later and I have to get up at 5:00 am for work. Some days I am finally falling a sleep at 4:30 am and then that darn alarm clock goes off.

I don't know what my problem is but I either don't want to fall asleep at night, or once I'm awakened I can't fall back asleep (more times than not). The thing is, I don't feel overly tired because of it. Is it possible I just don't need that much sleep? I don't have any health problems. I think I'll look into the melatonin and talk with my Dr. about this during my annual in a couple of months.

I've done the whole Melatonin thing and that doesn't work.

I am now on Ambien and struggle with that even.

I need to check into something you would sedate an elephant with. Cripes, it just gets OLD...

So many nice, normal people end up confused after taking it (probably about 1/4 of patients) and I find it doesn't work all that well for about half the people who take it. Ambien CR was better than plain Ambien as far as side effects but my facility won't supply the CR anymore due to cost.

Lately I've been using benedryl as a sleep aid. I generally take my vitamins and supplements (fish/flax oil) before bedtime. I've found that if I take benedryl at the same time, it seems to work quicker and better than on an empty stomach. It appears to be doing the trick so far.

I have tried Melatonin and always felt graugy in the morning. I used to drink a lot of caffinated drinks even in the evening but have tried to cut that out later in the day and it seems to help a little for falling asleep but still every work night I wake up a few hours before the alarm is set for and have a hard time getting back to sleep. On nights I don't work the next day I sleep pretty good.

This is what my cardiologist recommended as well. He said to buy something that had the same ingredients as Benedryl in a generic as it would be cheaper. But what I've found works the best and the quickest is Nyquil! Simply Sleep also works to a lesser degree.

I also run a fan year around so that I have white noise and that helps a little too.

Yes, that's what I get, the generic form. At my local Sam's Club I can get a 400 tablet bottle for around $5! That many Benedryl would cost me an arm and a leg. I merely stated benedryl in my post so others would know what I'm talking about.

We also do the fan for white noise. I have a small one that I even take with me when I'm traveling.

I have no problem sleeping at home, but I psych myself out when I'm on call at the hospital. The anticipation of my pager possibly going off makes me anxious. :doctor:

If some of you drink diet drinks containing aspartame, you may want to try not drinking them for about a month and see if your sleep pattern improves. I actually started having a lot of symptoms of a thyroid condition called "graves disease" a little over a year ago and after all tests coming back negative specialist asked me if I drank diet drinks with aspartame. He recommended I quit and see if my symptoms improve and within a month I was back to normal. I had virtually every symptom of graves disease including troubles sleeping and waking up with panic attacks. My dad was getting dizzy and passing out at times and they couldn't figure out why and it also turned out to be aspartame. Aspartame is bad news and if it is causing all of these symptoms after consuming for only a year or two, who knows what it is going to cause after long time consumption of 10 or 20 years. I fully expect it to be linked to various forms of cancer in the future.

I am aspartame free!! :D.

It is bad for people that have MS, so I dumped it.. :nono:

It is amazing how getting rid of 1 thing can make such a difference... if we only knew...

Yes, it is amazing the things aspartame can do to people but yet they still allow it to be used. I really do believe it should be removed from the market because it is bad news. Unfortunately, nothing will be done about it until it is definitively linked to something serious such as some form of cancer and the lawsuits start. It has, however, already been linked to brain tumors but for some reason you never hear mention of this.

For women, sleeplessness is also a side affect of menopause. I wonder if taking Nyquil for years is bad?

Dizneyana
04-19-2010, 04:55 PM
Ummmm... you said the 'M' word... :nono:

It's not that for me.. the doctor said I am fine.. not even pre-menopausal... :woohoo:

I don't know about the Ny-Quil thing... you should switch to Tylenol PM...

I have taken nyquil for years I can't sleep without it. I stopped taking it when I got pregnant and didn't sleep for a year! I even take it to Disney World.

But what I've found works the best and the quickest is Nyquil! You should not be taking NyQuil every night!! Or even at all, really. NyQuil contains phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine and both can cause high blood pressure. I had a doctor tell me more than once that if NyQuil came to market today instead of decades ago it would never be approved for use.

Interesting information about the aspartame, though. I drink more Diet Coke than I should (although not near bedtime) and that's loaded with aspartame. I may have to quit drinking it (which I know I should anyway) to see if that helps.

Well, I'll offer my view. I have a mild form of epilepsy, but with the right medication, I seem to be doing okay with sleep (don't recommend this for anyone...). But I have gone through periods in the past with several days of insomnia.

What really helps though is this - and I am not trying to insult anyone's intelligence as most of this seems obvious, but is often ignored.
- cut the caffeine way down especially after 4pm or so

- exercise regularly (30 min a day if you can swing it)

- don't watch tv before bed. In fact, get it out of your bedroom.

- keep a good diet (this could be a whole other post)

- most importantly, don't worry about stuff, especially sleeping

The above have helped me a lot. I get up normally at 6, but go right to bed at 11 or so. Feel great, sleep great.

Oh this is not good for you at all. It would be best if you start trying to break yourself from the nyquil habit.

It's 4:20 am and I'm wide awake. I don't usually have trouble going to sleep, just staying asleep. But then again, I took a nap yesterday afternoon, so maybe that's my problem. Right now I'm trying to decide whether or not to go back to bed, or just stay up until my son is getting up for school.

Welcome to the club, Amy... :welcome:

Although those naps feel so great at the time, they can sabotage the night...

Hope your stay here is short! :D

I'm here again because of my tooth.. When that Tylenol wears off, I know it!!

My son was having insomnia issues. The doctor did a blood test and it turns out he was severely (and I do mean severely!) iron deficient. The doctor put him on 325 mg of iron 2x a day to raise his blood iron and voila! Sleep issues gone! Something to check with your doctor about.
