We're packing to leave right now, and my wife has placed a lot of food onto a carry-on bag. Unopened boxes of ganola bars, wheat thins, and about a dozen small packages of instant oatmeal. There's no liquids or gels. Can we do this, or will they make us check the bag?

You can take food on the plane. We just got back on Friday and we had pop tarts, granola bars, a box of donuts in our carry on. As long as you have no liquid you're fine.

I have done this the past three trips. It was never a problem. Liquids are the problem.
Have fun!

We always take snacks on the plane. But also for the first time we shipped a box of snacks and breakfast foods to the resort about two weeks before we left.

Us too. We always carry a backpack full of pop tarts, snacks etc in case one of our checked pieces gets lost. We have to have our breakfast food for the week!

We always pack snack foods in our carry on tote. Have never had a problem getting thru security.

1) As mentioned, no problem.
2) Just make sure TSA can see the goodies, if asked.
. . . pack them in a gallon-size plastic baggie
. . . or two
. . . leave all the bars factory-wrapped
