Oct. 16, 2001 – Edward B. “Ted” Crowell, an engineer who became vice president of facilities at WDW during his 34-year career with the company, died of liver failure at the age of 71 in Orlando, Fl. He started as an engineer at Disneyland, in 1958 and was credited with designing the “Q” lines, a compact way to snake visitors into rides and attractions. Crowell also designed the E ticket, used to admit visitors to the hottest rides during the early years when WDW visitors used coupon books to access park attractions.
Oct. 16, 2002 – Jamie-Lynn Sigler debuted as the new star of Disney’s Broadway show “Beauty and the Beast.”
Oct. 16, 2003 – The redesigned Disney exhibit was unveiled at the Burbank Historical Society in California. The display gives an historical account of the evolution of animation, with a major focus on Audio-Animatronics Technology. (Which was introduced at Disneyland in 1963 in the “Enchanted Tiki Room” and “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln” attractions.)
Oct. 16, 2003 – The Walt Disney Co. recognized 11 honorees as 2003 Disney Legends at a ceremony held at Disney Legends Plaza on the studio lot in Burbank, Ca. The honorees included Al Taliaferro-artist; Edna Disney-wife of company co-founder Roy O. Disney; Neil Beckett-character merchandise; Tutti Camarata-music supervisor; Ilene Woods-voice actress; Lillian Disney-wife of company co-founder Walt Disney; Buzz Price-Imagineer; Orlando Ferrente-Imagineer; Buddy Hackett-actor/comedian; Floyd Gottfredson-artist; and Richard Fleischer-film director.
Oct. 16. 2003 – Leonard Shannon, a 14-year veteran of Disney’s publicity department and helped publicize the “Davy Crockett” films for the Disneyland TV series, died at his home in Goleta, Ca.
Oct. 16, 2004 – The Game of Life Pirates of the Caribbean was released.
Oct. 16, 2004 – The Wonderful World of Disney aired “Growing Pains: Return of the Seavers.”
Oct. 16, 2006 – The music video for the Aly & AJ song “Greatest Time of Year” debuted after the premiere of the Disney Channel Original Movie “Twitches.” The tune from their “Acoustic Hearts of Christmas”- themed album, was being used to promote the Disney feature “The Santa Clause 3.”
Oct. 16, 2007 – “High School Musical on Tour,” a new stage version of the hit Disney Channel movie, began a series of performances at Auditorium Theatre in Rochester, N.Y.
Oct. 16, 2007 – Walt Disney Records released “A Disney Channel Holiday.” The CD featured performances by Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, The Cheetah Girls, Aly & AJ, and stars of “High School Musical.”
