American Idol Experience question

I am curious if anyone has tried the auditioning process. If so, do you have any pointers to be successful in that process? I am not asking for any vocal advice, but do they like "performing" in the audition like on stage or just stand there and sing? Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Also, can you change the pitch of the song like at regular kareoke?

a friend did it, and she said it was just like american idol. you go up and just sing your song accapella.
