I have read on other posts that EMH only requires your room key....but what if you didn't buy tickets, you only purchased the room ?

Doesn't the EMH require that you purchase a ticket also? If not, this would be a great way to get into the parks for free !

Whatever you read was wrong. The turnstyles still need to be activated (park ticket) to get in. They are asking for your room key to verify that you are staying on-site, they do this at the turnstyles (of you don't have your tickets on the room key) and at the attraction entrance.

Your Disney Ticket is activated on your room key. No ticket.....no entry, EMH our not. Sorry!

If your ticket is separate from your room key, you will need the ticket and the room key to get into the park during EMH, and then your room key to show at attractions.

If you're planning to go into the parks, you will need park tickets. Unless you have an annual pass, it works easiest if you have your tickets added to your room key which will then act as both admission to the park, room key and proof that you are a guest eligible to participate in extra magic hour. As others have noted, the room key only proves you are a guest. Park tickets are still required for entry to extra magic hours.
