I know disney has these wonderful water parks (typhoon/blizzard beach) but what ever happened to 'RIVER COUNTRY" the ole watering hole...Does it lay dormant or is it used in some other capacity at disney......

FL lake water tends to get a bacteria in it that can enter through the ear and into the brain. That is one main reason it closed. It was one of the best parts of the trip in the 70s

If you take a boat from FW to the WL or MK, you can see what remains of River Country. Having many memories of the place from childhood, it is a sad thing to see.

From behind Pioneer Hall (HDDR) you can see the whole "Island".

Oddly enough, I never heard if anyone at River Country ever had any severe problems. Is the bacteria something that accumulates over time, or had it been there and they were just lucky no one got hurt?

I think the bacteria "reason" was a rumor. The real reason for the closure was cost cutting after 9/11. River Country and the other section of Pop Century were closed up...and now both look like ghost towns. River Country fell into major disarray and I think the costs of cleaning and opening it back up are probably too high now. Seems odd that it's still there though...leaves hope that Disney might do something with it someday. :(

Since this topic really isn't news related, I'm going to move the thread over to our Water Parks forum where it will get more attention.

Thanks! :mickey:

My parents never took us. They always said if they want to swim in a lake, they could do that at home:sick:

The main pool at FW was recently refurb'd & a slide added. There was a barrel from River Country used - the slide kind of winds around it.

I could be wrong, but I thought River Country closed long before 9/11?

I have fond memories of it as well. Remember the swimming pool it had, with the slide that just stopped in mid-air? It seemed so high, but then again, I was pretty small at the time. It was a great place to have fun. :(

It closed in November 2001 for refurbishment (like it normaly would) and never reopened. Disney announced in 2005 or 2006 that it was permanently closed (i.e. 4 years of neglect increased the $$ to clean it up). :ack:

It you take the Segway tour at Ft. Wilderness, you will see it (most of it is behind a wall) and be able to use the old locker rooms as restrooms, if needed, prior to the tour going out onto the rest of the property.

Ohhhh the days of the lazy river tube ride, the steam train with stops around the loops at Ft Wilderness, swimming in Bay Lake and the paddle wheeler going over to Discovery Island. Those day are gone and we are getting older.

There are videos on-line. Go to the very popular website that people post videos on... type in River Country. There is a good video called We Will Never Forget. There are also 2 videos taken in 2008.
