Disney plays Santa for ABC with animated 'Prep and Landing'

By Gary Levin, USA TODAY

Santa's elves are making a pit stop at ABC on their way from the North Pole.
Walt Disney Animation, in its first special for its sibling TV network, is prepping Prep and Landing, due late this year. Based on characters created by Chris Williams (Bolt) and produced by Pixar whiz John Lasseter, Prep looks at the high-tech North Pole Christmas Eve Command Center, where coordinator Magee (Scrubs' Sarah Chalke) pairs disgruntled elf Wayne (Dave Foley) with eager young recruit Lanny (Derek Richardson) to prepare the world's homes for Santa's arrival.

ABC hopes to repeat the success it had with 2007's DreamWorks special Shrek the Halls, which drew more than 20 million viewers. Like that special, Prep "works on two levels," says ABC's Vicki Dummer. For kids: "High-tech tools they use," such as the gingerbread-man-shaped Naughty Detector. For parents: "A lot of inside jokes that are nods to classic Christmas specials.

The trailer says Dec 1st, 830 PM, but there's a presidential address supposed to be on instead now.

Any word on rescheduling??

It's being pushed back a week to December 8th at the same time, 8:30/7:30 CT. You can also catch it December 18th at 7/6 CT on ABC Family.

My boys are very excited to watch this so I tried to set the Tivo for it. ABC has been advertising it for Tuesday night, but my listings do not have it. "It has Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" that night. Am I just a victim of a local glitch?

Nevermind, I did some research, looks like the local ABC will be showing it on the 13th since there is the Titans Jeff Fisher show on the 8th.

I'm an all around Scrooge and can't stand Xmas

but...

Prep and Landing was actually pretty funny.

I believe it will be airing again on ABC Family so check it out if you can.

The 7 year old didn't like it because it ended and he didn't want it to.

Funny show, has some traditional Christmas sentimentality as well.

We really liked it, as well! I didn't have much in the way of expectations for it, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought it was cute and clever and surprisingly touching at times.

Thumbs up from us!

Prep and Landing is on my DVR and my son has watched it at least twice a day if not more each day since it aired. It is hands-down his favorite Christmas Show besides Charlie Brown.

Also we recorded the HGTV special about WDW Christmas preparations. He is now wanting to watch both show.

We loved it, too!

After watching it a few times now (we DVR'ed it for DD), I noticed some cute details - though I'm sure there's TONS I missed.

I like how there's a little Christmas tree on the shelf behind Magee's desk that looks like an homage to Charlie Brown's little tree - it even has the one red ornament on it that weighs it down...!

Another cute thing that my son noticed was how when Lanny is checking out Timmy's digital camera, the second picture of Wayne actually has red-eye (how cool is that?!)

Of course there were things like the sled being called Rosebud, etc. - what other things did you guys notice or like?

I totally LOVED this new tradition -- and I loved the little homage to Charlie Brown. What was the deal with calling the sleigh Rosebud? I am sure it has some significance, I just can't figure it out.

I hope it comes out on DVD cause I would love to buy it!

Google 'sled rosebud' and you'll get your answer (spoiler alert).

LOVED IT!
There was so much going on, I had to see it again when it was re-broadcast. The humor is side-splitting. Love the reindeer, especially Thrasher.

Watch the cups that Magee is drinking from.
Each one has a cute saying.

Disney hit one out of the park, IMHO. I'm definitely going to get the DVD when it comes out.

Laughed out loud when they "revved up the engines" on the sleigh.

What I thought was interesting is called a Walt Disney production but it looked almost like I was watching a Pixar movie. It almost had this Monster's Inc feel to it. I could almost hear John Goodman and Billy Crystal's voices as the two elves and Jennifer Tilly of the girl elf in Mission Control.

Oh, man - I LOVED when they "revved up" the reindeer!!

Not only is "tinsel" a new word for awesome, but I've been using "frostbite", too (it's my new "curse" word that won't get me in trouble!!)

My 12 year old son said to his sister today, "are you a baby elf?" just to be funny and she looked right up at him and said, "NO WAY - I have a PENSION!!!" (pause) then - "Mom... What's a pension?"

BAHAHAHA!!

Absolutely loved this!

Actually laughed out loud at the scene with Thrasher.
