I went to WDW Sept. 2006 and didn't buy trip insurance. Now it seems the hurricanes are more common and stronger. Just want to know other posters opinions. Do you buy trip insurance?

We are currently in a more active hurricane cycle and will be for about another 10 years. In general, however, tropical storms are not a big deal for WDW. They have only caused a closure for less than 10 days over almost 40 years of operating 365 days a year.

The biggest thing about trip insurance is your airfare. If a hurricane warning is issued for FL within a day or two of your arrival WDW will help you reschedule. Airlines aren't so accommodating. So, I almost always bought trip insurance when I was flying. I had to use it once and it convinced me to always have it. When I drive, I usually don't because WDW will help reschedule. If rescheduling is not an option then you might want the insurance.

We always get the trip insurance, it covers more than just airfare. My sister fell and broke her hip while at Disney quest and it covered what we missed while caring for her. It is a good thing to have even if you don't need it.

We always get trip insurance, but have never needed to use it. In Sept. 2004, we thought we would need to use it when Hurricane Jeanne was heading for Florida, but Disney allowed us to reschedule our vacation to November 2004 with no penalties. I am convinced though that the only time I don't buy the insurance will be the time that I will need to use it!!:(

Those of you that buy the trip insurance, where have you bought it -- online?

I know you can shop deals but we decided to just use the one Disney sells. Seemed a bit easier and made me feel more comfortable.

We usually buy the one that Disney recommends too. I believe it is through TravelGuard. For our most recent trip, it cost $133.90 total.

I would caution you to CAREFULLY read what is covered in the policy you buy. I've heard horror stories of some that are pretty particular about just what is covered. Also, I might suggest that you talk to a travel agent, someone like Magical Journeys (http://www.yourmagicaljourneys.com/) might be able to help you with it.

I paid for the airfare with a voucher I needed to use from American Airlines. So I don't know if trip insurance would help me out. When booking the tickets, I asked what if I would need to cancel or rebook and the agent said I would lose the value of the voucher.

My DH and I travel in Sept. to WDW and have never purchased trip insurance or needed it. We've found lots of rain but never more than that.

I never buy insurance. Insurance companies are in the business to make money, just like casinos. I don't like either. I do insure my house and car, but not my vacations.

Here's why:
Lost luggage? Trip insurance gives you money when your luggage is lost. Big deal, all of my stuff together is worth less than the cost of insurance. Plus the airline has built in insurance for this.
Hurricane? If I'm not able to get to Orlando the airline and Disney usually will give out vouchers to use at a later time, so that works the same. If I'm stuck at the resort during a hurricane, they give you a voucher, same thing. If I can't get out of Orlando at the end of my trip because of a hurricane, again Disney will put you up in their shelter or possibly room and then the airline will get you out when they can. So in these cases, you get a voucher for time lost. Vouchers are the same thing as cash for me as I will return anyway. I've read lots of trip reports from people who experienced park closures due to hurricanes, so from their experiences I know Disney makes up for it.
Someone fell and broke her hip at Disney Quest and used trip insurance? Sounds like a perfectly good lawsuit to me. That's worth much more than trip insurance would pay. (please don't take offense, just seems like a good lawsuit.)
What else does trip insurance pay for???
OK, not to jinx myself, but I guess I'm out of luck and have to cancel the trip because of some unforeseen reason. Only reason I could possibly have to cancel for is if I were in a coma. Nothing else could keep me away from WDW. In that case, I would loose my cheap airfare because I don't pay for transferable (or whatever) tickets. Disney allows you to reschedule without penalty if you have a good enough reason (I think coma would be a good reason.) I would loose any extra deals, i.e. free dining or whatever.

I know there's some other reasons (can't think of them right now) to get trip insurance, but for me... I'd rather spend that $ in the park, and anyway as long as my family and I make it past check-in at the resort, Hakuna matata.

I don't buy trip insurance, I also don't buy extended warranties. Like my last new car. Dealer insisted I buy the extended warranty and I mean insisted. I told him no, it's a Toyota. I'll go 100,000 miles before anything breaks. I'm half way there.

Some good points but in the end it is worth every penny if it takes insurance to make you feel safe going on your trip or spending the money. In the end there are dozens of health related problems that can keep you away. I also do not normally buy insurance but this year I felt it was important for my family. This time of year is hurricane season and i dont know about you but i am not staying in a shelter if i dont have to and my luggage for the three of us is much more than $133 if it is lost. Just ones opinion!

TravelGuard or Berkeley are both good insurance companies. I would suggest you look into "cancel for any reason". This way you are also covered if you should lose your job or any family or friend were to get sick, even if they aren't travelling with you. You never know what could happen.

I'm with you! i sold insurance for a living for over 8 years and now after all these years I really think it is a bit of a joke. Insurance companies are out to make $ and there is only so much you can insure for (house, car, health and life) after that...your just throwing your $ away! just my humble opinion!

No we haven’t bought travel insurance. We went thru the hurricane Charlie at DW in 2004 & were just fine. As we get older, I think we may take insurance because of varying health issues, etc. but not because of hurricanes.
