No really. He says that this is it. (feb 12th, 2009)
Brett the former jet says basically that age has caught up to him, that the necessary surgery to repair his arm is not worth it (too much rehab).

Well, thanks for the memories brett favre.
He had quite the carear.
5,720 compleations (9,280 attemps, 61.6%) for 65,127 yards .
464 TDs
310 Interceptions
469 sacks for 3,101 yards lost.
He ran 576 times for 1,829 yards and 14 TD's.
His carear spans from 1991 to 2008.
He played 16 seasons where he started all 16 games (1992 he played 15, 1991 he played 2)

(all stats were found on the NFL website).

2 Questions-

1) Will he remain retired ?
2) will he be inducted into the hall of fame ?

Let's see if this one sticks!

If the surgery really will take lots of time with rehab....he might actually stay retired.

And yes, he will be inducted into the hall of fame. He deserves to be.

Yes
and
Without a doubt, on his first year up for induction. There is no question. He is the only player in NFL history to win three MVP's back to back to back.

Lets not let the last half of his Jets career trump the legacy this man left. No one remembers Montana in KC, or Emmit in Pheonix, Eddis George in Dallas, etc....

Let's hope he stays retired. He is a first ballot, unanimous selection. This coming from someone who was a big Bears fan growing up. He was just good.

Gee thanks Eric Mangenius.

Now now.
We had 4 QB's on the roster.
I still think 2 of them might be good enough...

You can't really blame Mangini for the Favre debacle. Woody Johnson pretty much handcuffed him when it came to signing him.

Although I'm glad he did, letting Pennington go saved MY team's season! ;)

I have been blaming him & tannenbaum for a few years now (both good blame & bad)

Again, Chad is a class act.
Hope he does well again this year.

An interesting thing happened today...the Jets let go of Coles.

Wonder if Tuna is thinking that the rapport between him and Chad would work as well in Miami as it did in NY?

We're in need of a receiver, and Coles could come cheap.

Here we go again. Not sure I would like it if he were to join my Vikings. It's not like he would be around very long so why bother. I really don't think he would help us get to a Superbowl.

Source: Favre, Vikings to meet

By Ed Werder
ESPN.com

Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress and quarterback Brett Favre plan to meet at an undisclosed location later this week to discuss the possibility of the former Packers and Jets quarterback renouncing his retirement from the NFL to play the 2009 season with the Vikings, according to a source with direct knowledge of discussions between the two parties.

There is a mutual understanding that sometime soon thereafter Favre will decide whether to sign with the Vikings. The team would expect him to participate fully in offseason minicamps and training camps, which he missed last year with the Jets.

Childress was expected to leave Minnesota on Wednesday and meet with Favre on Wednesday night and Thursday in Mississippi, The [Minneapolis] Star Tribune reported on its Web site, citing a person with knowledge of the situation.

Favre has not been working out, and he declined to have surgery to repair the torn biceps tendon that plagued him the final month of last season.

Favre may believe the injury can heal on its own, as did a similar problem with his left shoulder while he played in Green Bay.

A source close to Favre told ESPN's Chris Mortensen that how the injury heals will play a role in the quarterback's decision.

The source also said that the quarterback's agent, Bus Cook, is researching unemployed NFL quarterback coaches to see if one can be hired to work with Favre in Mississippi while Favre ponders a possible return.

On Wednesday, Cook denied the report, telling USA Today that Favre has not come to him saying he wants to play and that he has not been looking for a quarterback coach.

"I talked to Brett yesterday. I said, 'What's all this about?' He said, 'I don't know. I don't know where that's coming from,'" Cook said, according to USA Today. "I would think the first order of business would be that Brett would tell me, 'Bus, I want to play again.' That hasn't happened."

"I can promise you, there is no personal trainer working out Brett Favre and I am not trying to hire him a quarterback coach," Cook said, according to the report.

Favre wanted to play for the Vikings last season, but the Packers specifically eliminated their NFC North rivals as a potential destination for the Green Bay icon when they negotiated the trade that sent Favre to the Jets last August.

Although Favre had been emphatic about not returning next season, he never anticipated the Jets would release him after drafting Mark Sanchez in the first round, and he could see the Vikings as the opportunity to fulfill the goal he was deprived of last season -- winning a Super Bowl.

Favre admitted to ESPN that he was motivated to play in 2008 largely because of his resentment toward Packers general manager Ted Thompson.

But Cook said Favre's main motivation, if he were to return, would not be to exact vengeance on Green Bay's front office.

"If he wants to play again, it's not going to be to get revenge," Cook said, according to USA Today. "If he comes back to play, it's going to be because he loves football.

"Are there certain things about the Packers, how things ended there and he felt they didn't treat him right? That's true. Does he have a certain vendetta against them? That's not true. If he came back, it would be because he wants another chance to win a Super Bowl," Cook added, according to the report.

The Vikings had planned to have Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels compete for the starting quarterback position in training camp.

With Jackson battling injuries last season, journeyman Gus Frerotte started 11 games and led the Vikings in passing.

Minnesota finished 10-6 to capture the NFC North but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs in a game started by Jackson.

See my earlier posts in this thread ... I've never liked this guy, I don't like him even more now, I think he's totally overrated, selfish, and disingenuous and I don't get all the fawning over him even a little bit.

Seriously? He just needs to go away. I'm sick and tired of hearing about him.

Something for Vikings Fans to Remember!

Favre last season had a one to one interception to TD ratio!! 22 TD's and 22 INT's!! That's horrendous!

Favre should just go away. It's all about him and what personal records he can set. The only one he doesn't have is Jim Marshall's consecutive games played...He is a self-centered, egotistical pompous player who's main concern is himself. I am a Packer fan, and was a Favre fan. He should have gotten on his tractor and ridden off into the sunset after the Giants NFC title game.

Ian
05-06-2009, 05:50 PM
You know even if I thought it was only about personal records I'd be more okay with it.

But who's kidding who? He wants to come back to the Vikings so he can play the Packers twice this season and exact some kind of twisted "revenge" on them for letting him go.

He's incapable of dealing with the fact that the Packers moved on from him. He's a childish, immature, self-centered moron.

I have to say,
I doubt the arm is ready. Not for a season.

He cant stay away from the game.
Its sad in some way.Like the only thing he can really do is tarnish (further) his reputation.

As far as reasons- It goes back to teams ignoring anything but percieved talent. I mean in a different thread Ian pointed out that the jets must have been desperate to trade so much away to get Sanchez. Comparitivly speaking, How desperate are the Vikings ?

Favre cannot last another season. The pounding on the field takes its toll. For as long as he has been out there- there is no way he can last an entire season as a starter.

Statistically he is the best qb Green Bay ever had. But, he doesn't belong on the same field as Bart Starr. the most successful and classy qb in the history of the franchise. Favre blew any chances to stand along side Mr. Starr with all of his antics the last few years. It's too bad he will be remembered for the last couple years of his career and his declining game, rather than retiring after leading the Pack to the NFC title game.

I'm a Packer fan and I'm a Favre fan, the man just wants to play football. I don't really think he cares about anymore records, I do, however think he's holding a grudge against the Packers management for letting him go. Maybe what it's going to take is the Pack wipping his a$$ a couple of times on the field this year to send him off on his tractor into the sunset. All will be forgotten in a few years when he shows up at Lambeau when they retire his jersey and as he enters the hall of fame as a PACKER !!

I'll admit that I've never been a Favre fan, but I do recognize his talent.

However, IMHO the past two off seasons have ruined his reputation. He's trying to hang on for the wrong reasons, and this is what everyone (outside GB) is going to remember.

He's become a punch line, and it's sad. Just go home, and wait for you HOF induction.

How's this for a scenario? Eagles and Vikings both make the playoffs (won't happen with Brett "The Interception Machine" Favre at the helm, I know, but let's pretend anyway) ...

Second to the last game of the season and McNabb goes down with an injury. First round of the playoffs, Eagles meet the Vikings and your match-up is Vick vs. Favre.

The media would have a field day!

The real NFL (National Fantasy League) is going haywire. People actually thought the man would stay retired. I check my old posts and I thought I made the prediction here about coming back during the Vikes bye week. But hey, it was all about not having to spend an extra 2 weeks with his new teammates he won't get to know anyways. Memo to Vikings fan... You're NOT going to the Super Bowl this year, Let alone even MAKE the Playoffs.

Favre will lead the team alright. In a revolt. By having the head coach lap (I mean pick) you up at the airport off the teams private jet and personally escort you to training camp. This sends the best kind of message to the team. You all play by these rules and Brett gets to play by his. I mean $12 mil? Are they nuts? Favre will have a great start to his season but by end of October when the playoff push starts his 40+ yr old body will not respond the way it used to.

When does this guy retire? In February when the previous season is right there in his consciousness. He just went thru 17 weeks and his body can't take it. He is worn down and physically exhausted. So thats why he quits. I get that its fresh and you want out. But something happens in the next 6 mos. His body starts healing and the weekly grind of pain goes away and he feels he can do this again. Enough already.

What I would like to happen is for him to have a press conference and nobody shows up. One last point for the Vikings fans out there...
Favre couldn't win in domes when he played for the Packers. Where are half of his games this year?

good luck with that circus Minnesota.

I think the answer will come when he throws 3 ints or 4 tds (or both ???). How well he plays in the game. How long before his arm/body takes a pounding...
by the way how good iss that O line at pass protection ? I know they are good for the running game...

I hope its an aggressive one - but there are too many "Brett" fans out there.....

This is how its goes around here - the people who are Packer fans 1st are really upset about this and feel like they have been betrayed - and are totally sick about this ego maniac; then there are the ones that are Brett Favre fans and think that he still can do no wrong and are still upset with the Packer's organization for letting Brett go in the 1st place. I have heard that husbands and wives will not be watching the games together - because one is a true Packers fan and the other is a "Brett" fan.

I'm actually pretty surprised at how many people seem to think this is going to be good for the Vikes.

The guy had a 1 to 1 INT to TD ratio last year. That's horrendous. He's done. Washed up.

In fact, I don't ever think he was "all that" in the first place, but for the last 3 or 4 years he certainly hasn't even been a shadow of what people claim he was.

Here's my prediction for what happens ... the Vikes start off strong ... win maybe 4 or 5 of their first 6 or 7 games ... and then the wheels fall off.

It will be mixed. I grew up on the Packers and only live 15 minutes from Lambeau Field so I'm pretty much ground zero. In my office there are about 2/3 of us that are glad the Packers are rid of the Favre circus and 1/3 who think that Ted Thompson is the anti-Christ for not bringing Favre back.

Last year I was at the annual scrimmage, when Aaron Rodgers was announced the crowd booed him. Totally ridiculous. To be honest, I'm a huge Packer fan but there are many times I'm embarrassed to admit it just because we have so many homer fans.I have several friends who think Favre is the greatest QB ever to play the game. When I argue with them they will not listen to any arguments. These are the same guys who will cheer Favre and root for the Vikings this year.

They also claim that the only reason the Packers went to the NFC Championship just two years ago was because of Favre's play, weird that they don't look at his poor play in that game as the reason they didn't make the Super Bowl but I digress.

To make a long story, the crowd will be mixed with Packer vs. Favre fans. My personal thoughts, I hope the Packer's D knocks Favre silly in the game.

I remember watching Brett play several times in college. Southern Miss was in our conference (Memphis) and he was good. That seems like 10 lifetimes ago. It is amazing he is still playing all these years later and is still effective. I would love to have him qb my team if I were coaching. He is just one of those guys who knows how to win. All of that said I don't think he will retire for a few more years!
