Oriental Calligraphy Shop

I love the 'calligraphy' done at the little shop at DTD, I believe they are Japanese, but I'm not 100% sure and apologize if they are not. Two of my daughters have their name done in the 'painting' and I would love to learn how to do it. I asked the young lady that does it once, but she just said that her father taught her. I've tried to look it up on line (the sign claims it's an ancient art) but so far have come up empty handed.

Does anyone know anything about this? Where I could learn about this and how to do it?
