Converting old PH tickets to AP??

We are in very early stages of planning for 2009 Disney vacation. We recently found two old adult 5 day PH tickets with 3 days left on them. I believe they are from late 90's or early 2000's. I have heard you can "trade" in old tickets for credit on purchasing an AP? Is this true and how would I go about it?
Do they prorate the value based upon when the orginal tickets were purchased?
We are trying to figure out if is worth getting the AP. We are going for 7 days this trip and a possible second trip in 2010 (before pass expires).

The tickets might be worth more to just use up rather than applying towards an annual pass.

Basically the value of your tickets is based upon the original purchase price and number of unused days left on the ticket.

They can calculate this value for you at any guest services window at one of the parks or at Downtown Disney.
