View Full Version : Movies you have to watch?

I'm just curious if anyone out there is like me...occasionally I'll be flipping through the channels and a movie will come on that I've seen a million times before, and OWN on DVD, but I have to sit there and watch the whole thing, commercials and all.

Goodfellas was on Lifetime last night, which is what prompted this thread. My two other "much-watch" movies are Mommy Dearest and Jaws.

Do you guys have any "must-watch" movies, or am I just odd?

My DH gets extreeeeemly exasperated with me because I do this. I'll be watching a movie on TV, and he'll start fussing at me: "We have this on DVD! You could put it in and not waste time with commercials!"

My "must watch" movies are:

Steel Magnolias

Any of the Star Wars movies

Secondhand Lions

Pleasantville

I'm sure there are a couple more than aren't popping to mind right now.

Trust me...you're not odd! :)

I do this a lot with mainly chick flicks like Ever After, You've Got Mail, The Wedding Planner, Never Been Kissed, Bridget Jones, etc.

I do it with weird movies.... some that come to mind are Peggy Sue Got Married, Major League, That Thing You Do, Stand By Me, Now and Then and Shawshank Redemption. Steel Magnolias I watch a lot , but not every time. Yeah I know, what an odd mix.

I just had this happen this past weekend with Young Frankenstein!

I have a lot of movies that will stop me in my channel surfing tracks. Some would be...

Elf
Anchorman
Steel Magnolias
all three Lord of the Rings movies
Troy
She's Having a Baby
The Big Chill
Overboard
The Mummy Returns

The Bridget Jones movies are the only ones I can think of now. My DH would choose The Rookie and The Replacements, plus any cheesy 80s movie, but especially Better Off Dead with John Cusack.

I watched Goodfellas last night too!

It stops me, as does That Thing You Do, every time it is on.

Any old Frank Sinatra or Doris Day movie will stop me as well.......

First Wives Club is a favorite for me...
Also Princess Bride
When Harry Met Sally

Mine are old...

The Music Man
Hello Dolly!
The Sound of Music
12 Angry Men
Dial "M" for Murder (I don't own this one yet)
Casablanca
Gone With The Wind

Even if I don't have time to watch the whole movie, I'll still stop on these if they're on for as long as I have to watch. If they've already started, I'll still watch what's left.

I have a few...
Princess Diaries one and two!
Parent Trap
Dirty Dancing
Pretty Woman

Dh knows if he's channel surfing and comes across any of these he'd better immediately stop and resign himself to watching it!

I am the same way, almost any of the 80's movies will catch my attention.
Weird Science may be my favorite movie of ALL time! "He don't even have a license, LISA" :secret:

The Rundown (with The Rock and Sean William Scott) I have seen this a million times and still laugh my head off at it!

Die Hard - always stop to watch Die Hard. 5 minutes in to the movie, 5 minutes left in the movie . . it doesn't matter. Must stop and watch. BUT, not if it is the "language friendly" version. Takes away many of the most memorable/funny lines. (I guess some of the powers that be think it is ok to air a movie with people getting killed and buildings destroyed - but - watch your language!!?? )

Other usually stop to watch movies -
Ever After
Back to the Future
Caddyshack
Rush Hour
That Thing You Do
Elf
Pollyanna
The Three Lives of Thomasina (rare to see being aired)

OMG - I do this all the time too! For me it's:

Pirates of the Caribbean (the first one)
National Treasure (the first one)
and the Briget Jones movies

I owe all of these but actually prefer to "find" them on TV! I think I've seen Pirates and National Treasure like 10 times each this year alone! (since they are always on!)

Disneyatic ---- that line is HILARIOUS in the movie. So is the bar scene.

Ahhhhh....the memories of watching the movie. I love it!!!!

I do this too - no matter how much time is left in these movies - I will stop and watch - drives my DH crazy - though I think he does it too only with different types of movies. Mine would have to be:

Sweet Home Alabama - just love that line "Why do you want to marry me anyway?" "So I can kiss you any time I want to" awwwww

Diary of a Mad Black Woman - love the message and the music

National Treasure

Parent Trap

Grease

Second Hand Lions

The Godfather

The Naked Gun

The Karate Kid

Life Is Beautiful

Mrs. Doubtfire

The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters

My "must watch" movies are:

:)

Ahhh...when I'm in the mood for a good cry, I can't click past Steel Magnolias, Beaches, or Terms of Endearment (the 3 movies guaranteed to make DH cry, too!)

Almost Famous
American Beauty

and I've never seen Requiem For A Dream on TV, but I could watch this everyday if it was instead of wearing out my copy on DVD ha

Real Genius - I LOVE that movie. Val Kilmer needs to do more comedy. He's great at it.

Others are:
Biodome
Clerks & Clerks II
Let's Go To Prison
Idiocracy
Elf
Stripes - or pretty much any Bill Murray film
Stars Wars trilogy (the first and ONLY one - none of that Jar Jar Binks garbage)
Serenity & the Firefly series
Pirates & sequels
National Treasure & sequels
Lake Placid
Finding Nemo
Cars
The Matrix (and maybe the second, but not the last one)
Pride & Prejudice
You've Got Mail
While You Were Sleeping

Soon to be - once they come on TV -
Iron Man
Kung Fu Panda

That's all that I could think of at the moment. The funny thing is that if you look at the first few movies on my list, you'd think that I was a guy, except for the fact that I left off the Godfather or any stereotypical "guy" movie. But the last few films make you think that I'm a girl, except for the fact that I left off your typical chick flicks. But just try getting me near Beaches or Steel Magnolias.

I've done this plenty of times. Considering the fact that I have a pretty extensive dvd collection and do own these movies, I still find myself watching them on tv when it comes on:

Dirty Dancing
Grease
Galaxy Quest
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Dracula 2000 (Gerard Butler is a very, very, very sexy Dracula)
A Few Good Men
Strictly Ballroom
The Full Monty

The first one that popped into my head was Shawshank Redemption and I couldn't believe someone else posted this movie. Most of my friends have never even heard of it. It is one of my top 10 favorite movies! I own it, but if I come across it, I always end up watching it!
Others that I just have to watch:
Steel Magnolias
Pretty Woman
Fried Green Tomatoes
The Breakfast Club
Dirty Dancing (I just watched it about a week ago!)

For me:

Jurassic Park
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
Finding Nemo

And for some odd, unknown reason:

Volcano

I don't know why...

Whenever I see "Working Girl" is coming on, I have to watch it. Even though I've seen it a million times and I knew it would be heavily edited I watched "Casino" on USA the other night. I don't even know why I watch it on TV. I'm too busy laughing at the horrible re-dubbing job to really watch it.

This happened to me last night with Freaky Friday (the remake). It was on the Disney Channel :mickey:

E.T.
A League of Their Own
Toy Story
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Polar Express
Lifetime movies ()

American President and You've got mail. I think I can quote every line in both of them. And we own both. That thing you do is definitely another one for me too. I'll often watch Forrest Gump, but can only watch it up until the wedding because then I become an emotional mess. Circle of Friends is definitely another "must watch" movie (and I've worn out my personal copy).

I do love Better off Dead ("Go that way really fast. If something gets in your way, turn.")

My DH also loves the Rookie and the Replacements. I can watch them over and over as well.

Galaxy Quest
Strictly Ballroom

I LOOOOVE Galaxy Quest. Never miss it when it comes on. It should have been on my list too.

For those of you who love Dirty Dancing, you might like Strictly Ballroom too.

I do like Better Off Dead. Not one I have to watch when it comes on, but definitely a great film!

And since we're quoting it, how about this one:

"Ah, come on, dude! It's Christmas Eve! I could be home right now, drinking this monster eggnog my brother makes with lighter fluid."

I was cruising through our preview guide this afternoon, and found the last 5 minutes of "Dial 'M' for Murder".

I watched it.

I had to.
