AirTran earns first place in airline-quality ranking
posted by Jason Garcia on Apr 7, 2008 6:10:44 PM

AirTran Airways finished at the head of the class in an annual airline-quality ranking released today.

Orlando-based AirTran ranked first in the 2008 edition of the Airline Quality Rating study, a report compiled by researchers at the University of Nebraska and Wichita State University that weighs on-time performance, denied boardings, mishandled baggage and customer complaints.

But the airline industry as a whole fared poorly in the study. See below for a full Associated Press story.

AirTran, Jet Blue rank well in airline quality amid dismal overall performance for industry

WASHINGTON (AP) — Low-cost carriers AirTran, Jet Blue and Southwest took the top three spots in a national survey of airline quality, while the industry overall fared poorly amid rising fuel prices and increasingly fed-up consumers.

At the bottom of the list released Monday were Comair, American Eagle and in last place: Atlantic Southeast Airlines.

The past year “was the worst year ever for the U.S. airlines,” said Brent Bowen, a study co-author and professor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Aviation Institute. “Overall operational performance and quality declined once again to the lowest level that it’s ever been.”

The annual Airline Quality Rating survey found that more bags were lost, more passengers were bumped, more consumers complained and fewer flights arrived on-time than in the previous year. The overall “quality score” the researchers gave the industry (-2.16) was the lowest in the nearly two decades they’ve been studying the airlines.

The survey comes at a difficult time for the industry given rising fuel prices, safety problems and bankruptcy troubles that shut down three carriers last week. ATA, Aloha Airlines and Skybus stopped flying because of financial pressures.

Major airlines also have slashed jobs while adding fees for second bags, traveling with pets and booking tickets by phone. And American, Southwest, Delta and United airlines have all had to cancel flights recently to perform safety inspections on some of their planes.

Last month, the Federal Aviation Administration hit Southwest with a $10.2 million civil penalty for missing safety inspections and then continuing to fly planes with passengers on board even after realizing the mistake. Southwest plans to appeal.

A trade group for the major U.S. carriers, the Air Transport Association, declined to comment on the report.

According to the study, the rate of consumer complaints was up 60 percent last year. US Airways had the most complaints. Southwest had the fewest. In all, complaints were up for 15 of the 16 airlines included in the study. Mesa Airlines was the exception.

About 37 percent of the complaints were for flight problems, including canceled or averted flights, said Dean Headley, an associate professor at Wichita State University and co-author of the study. About 20 percent of the complaints concerned baggage — stolen, lost or damaged. Another top complaint, at about 11 percent, was poor customer service.

On-time arrivals dropped for the fifth straight year, with more than one-quarter of all flights late, according to the survey. Southwest had the best on-time performance; Atlantic Southeast had the worst.

The rate of passengers bumped from overbooked flights also increased, up 13 percent. Jet Blue had the fewest bumped passengers; Atlantic Southeast had the most.

For lost bags, the industry overall had about seven mishandled bags for every 1,000 passengers — up from 6.5 in 2006. AirTran had the fewest mishandled bags, four for every 1,000 passengers. Headley said Air Tran’s good showing helped propel the airline from the No. 3 spot in the 2006 rankings to No. 1 last year.

Among the study’s other findings:

—More than one-third of Atlantic Southeast Airlines’ flights were late, the worst on-time performance in 2007. The airline also bumped passengers more often, at a rate of 4.5 per 10,000 passengers.

—Jet Blue and AirTran were far ahead of their competitors in avoiding bumping passengers from flights, at 0.02 and 0.15 per 10,000 passengers, respectively.

—American Eagle ranked last in baggage handling with 13.55 mishandled bags per 1,000 passengers.

The Airline Quality Rating study, compiled annually since 1991, is based on Transportation Department statistics for airlines that carry at least 1 percent of the passengers who flew domestically in the past year. The research is sponsored by the Aviation Institute at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and by Wichita State University.

I used to be a relatively loyal USAir customer, but they just got so unbelieveably user-unfriendly that I gave up and switched to Southwest when they moved into Philly.

Looks like, based on these rankings, I made a wise choice.

Our preferred airline- Spirit- is not on the list.

But the airline we end up having to use much more than we want is USAir- the lowest major carrier on the list. Honestly, I don't think they are all that bad- BUT their Philly employees are absolutely atrocious.

The thing that prevents us from using Southwest is their schedules- they don't release them far enough in advance- and we are major planners. We have our tickets for our fall and winter trips already- but Southwest doesn't go out past August yet. That would make me too nervous.

I wish JetBlue came to Atlantic City or Philly.

It won't help you, Linda, but SWA will be posting their new schedules good through the end of October on April 17th.

We, too, used to use USAirways but we switched to Southwest many years ago and have never looked back. We're comfortable with their open seating policy and their overall "no frills" setup, and the price is definitely right. And since most of our travel is between Orlando and Baltimore, getting a non-stop flight has never been a problem.

Southwest all the way. I am lucky that we have a small airport 15 min from home that flies direct to MCO. Only airline there is Southwest. The flights from there always take off on time. On returning flights we never have to sit and wait for a gate.

On the last 3 trips home the flights were delayed due to weather and Southwest made every effort to get us on the plane the second it was ready to board and on my last trip home, when I went to pay for a cocktail I ordered, the flight attendent said "no charge" due to the plane leaving late (only 30 mins). And the delay wasn't even their fault.

While I would prefer assigned seating, I have never run into a problem with boarding and sitting with my family.

I flew Jetblue to MCO once and while the planes have assigned seating and TV's, they mangled my luggage...not once....but twice.

Our hometown airline Midwest didn't make the list. It may have been too small and not flying into enough airports to be deemed a "large" flyer. Oh, well.

Of all of those, I've never had a problem except with Delta. Long layovers or cancellations and horrible staff (I had a granola bar thrown at me by a flight attendant while I was asleep).

I can't believe Northwest is 4th on the list. Based on our own experiences, I think their customer service is very poor. :shake:

We fly on Midwest, our hometown airline. Although they are not large enough to make the poster's survey, Midwest is rated number 1 on the latest Zagat survey of airlines, and has been for several years. And they fly directly from Milwaukee to Orlando!

Wow, that's a really nice surprise! We fly out of Philly and can never get good rates on USAir anymore, so the past three times I've gone on vacation, we've flown AirTran...including our trip in two weeks!!

Exactly! They lost customers with us. We wanted to get them booked early.. so we went with Airtran instead. They're prices were alright.. I'm sure Southwest's will come out with cheaper ones, but it wasn't worth waiting for them.

I can't believe that United didn't rank farther down. My husband travels for a living and has booked them several times and every single time his flight is canceled. He hates that airline and has asked his companies travel agent to try to not book them.

I usually fly SW and love them. I've never had any problems with them.

We fly Midwest whenever possible. Never had a problem with them and Mitchell Field is sooooo much easier to deal with than O'Hare!!

If all airlines were like them there would be a lot less complaints.

The one headline mentioning "dismal overall performance" is pretty accurate.

ASA is one I try to avoid at all costs. SWA and Air Tran have always given me very good service. The last few times I've taken USAir and Delta I honestly can't complain, but the horror stories of others point out the depressing lack of consistency in the business.

We almost always fly Delta and really have never had a problem. Delta seems to be the only airline that can get us in and out of Fresno, CA on time.

I've had horrible experiences on US Air and United so I avoid them.
