I just heard a quick blurb about George Lucas making a TV show as a spinoff to the Star Wars movies...I am in no way a Star Wars buff but I don't think I care for this idea.

Just wondering if anyone else heard about it and what everyone's thoughts were.......

Yeah, that was announced quite a while ago but it's been in the news again recently because they are making some movement on the series. The basic thing is that it will follow non-movie characters through the Star Wars universe. They will interact with, and know about, movie characters, but those won't be the focus. I think it could be interesting if done right.

Excellent, is it going to the SciFi channel? I am guessing at this point it won't be on until Fall 2008? It would indeed be interesting.

I'm not that into it that I know the whole time frame, but there's got to be at least 20 years between Episode III and Episode IV. I just find it interesting that it took them so long to build the first Death Star compared to the seemingly several months it took to build the second.

I'd be interested in seeing more behind the story of General Grievous

Sounds like a good addition to Sci-Fridays!

Sounds kinda like the comic books. My son is way into them right now. :darth:

It's actually going to be on the Fox networks and will be debuting in 2009, and will be set during the time frame between episodes III & IV. As of July 2007 there are supposedly going to be 400 episodes and Lucas has stated that some main characters will likely make cameo appearences (so probably expect to see Darth Vadar, the Emperor, and maybe a young Han Solo, yoda, etc).

Seems like a few minor changes have been made from the original idea. Apparently 'Skywalker free' and at least 100 episodes at this point.

From E! News:

Star Wars TV Series Coming Soon

A short time from now, in a galaxy not far from your living room...

With shooting wrapping up last week on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, George Lucas is finally ramping up production on those long-awaited Star Wars TV projects he has been promising.

The head Jedi confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that Lucasfilm has "just begun work" on a new live-action spinoff that will bring the Star Wars mythology to the small screen. Additionally, Lucas Animation is deep in production on a weekly computer-animated 3-D series dubbed Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which the filmmaker expects to shop to various networks when finished.

Lucas considers the live-action program to be the more ambitious of the two, because it will be completely Skywalker free and instead center on supporting characters.

He admitted he was taking a risk that viewers—save the die-hard geeks who turn up at the Star Wars Celebration conventions in Greedo and Princess Leia getups—might not warm to Jedis, Sith and droids largely unfamiliar to them.

"The Skywalkers aren't in it—it's about minor characters," the 63-year-old Lucas told the newspaper. "It has nothing to do with Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader or any of those people. It's completely different."

Nevertheless, the Star Wars mastermind maintained that "it's a good idea, and it's going to be a lot of fun to do."

Lucas characteristically refused to divulge details about the storylines or even which minor characters might turn up in either starring or cameos. (We're lookin' at you, Boba Fett.)

Star Wars prequel producer Rick McCallum is currently auditioning writers for the live-action series, which Lucas envisions running for at least 100 episodes.

As for the new Star Wars CGI series, this is not your average Saturday-morning cartoon.

Unlike its 2-D forerunner Clone Wars, an Emmy-winning series of shorts that aired on the Cartoon Network, Lucas says the 3-D Clone Wars will break new technological ground.

As a result, Lucas acknowledged that some network suits have been a little skittish about the projects—perhaps recalling the so-so ratings of Lucas' Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which eschewed the thrills of its big-screen progenitors in favor of history lessons. (At Celebration III two years ago, Lucas said the live-action series will be similar in tone to those tube adventures.)

"They are having a hard time," Lucas said. "They're saying, 'This doesn't fit into our little square boxes,' and I say, 'Well, yeah, but it's Star Wars. And Star Wars doesn't fit into that box.'"

If old-school Stars Wars and high-octane action is what you're looking for, fear not, young Padawans.

Anthony Daniels, who played C-3P0 in the original trilogy and its prequels, has signed on to voice the protocol droid in Clone Wars, alongside animated versions of R2-D2, Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu, Anakin Skywalker, General Grievous, Princess Amidala and Count Dookoo. A trailer is now up at the official Star Wars Website.

In an interview with TV Guide last month, Lucas said his team of animators has completed more than 40 episodes and that he believed the CGI series needs "to go after 9 o'clock, and it can't be a kiddie channel."

These aren't the first Star Wars TV spinoffs. There were the animated Ewoks and Droids Saturday-morning cartoons, two live-action made-for-TV Ewok movies and, most infamously, the universally ridiculed 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.

For fans of the big screen, Lucas is also planning to tweak his Star Wars movies yet again and release all six episodes in a 3-D digital format. No word yet on a release date.

If this is done properly and knowing Lucas it will be. I think it will be a great show and with all the Sar Wars Fans always wanting more just look at the hundreds of spin off books out there, it will be a big hit.

New `Star Wars' Film Animated Will Be
Wednesday, February 13, 2008 5:47 PM EST
The Associated Press
By JAKE COYLE AP Entertainment Writer

NEW YORK (AP) — The "Star Wars" universe, already substantially rendered by computer generated imagery, is giving in all the way to animation.

"Star Wars: The Clone Wars," an animated film, will open in theaters Aug. 15 and be followed by a TV series of the same name, to air on the Cartoon Network and TNT this fall.

"I felt there were a lot more `Star Wars' stories left to tell," said "Star Wars" creator George Lucas in a statement. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the animation forward."

Produced by Lucasfilm Animation, both the film and TV show will be distributed through Time Warner Inc., which owns TNT, the Cartoon Network and the film's distributor, Warner Bros.

Lucas, who serves as executive producer, is also planning a live-action television series spinoff of the franchise, which he began working on last fall. The animated series has long been in the works, though the theatrical release was only announced late Tuesday.

The movie and subsequent series takes place between the ground covered in episodes II and III of the "Star Wars" films: "Attack of the Clones" (2002) and "Revenge of the Sith" (2005). It will include cartoon versions of many familiar characters, including Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Padme Amidala and General Grievous.

A new character named Ahsoka, Anakin's padawan, will be the first female Jedi to be a character of focus.

"It turned out to be an idea that George wanted to explore," said Dave Filoni, director of the "Clone Wars" movie and supervising director of the series. "Henry Gillroy (a writer on the series) and I very much wanted to have a female Jedi in more of a lead role because you've had all the boys."

More than 30 episodes are planned, though Filoni declined to say exactly how long the show will run. He acknowledged it's a finite timeline before encroaching on "Revenge of the Sith" story lines.

Though the "Star Wars" films have been extraordinarily lucrative, the force won't be expected to be as strong in cartoon form. The film and series are clearly aimed at younger viewers, though Filoni hopes to also entice the many "Star Wars" die-hard fans.

"An animated series always appeals more to a younger audience," said Filoni. "But at the same time, we've tried to do some sophisticated things and ensure that we are going to satisfy the broad spectrum of `Star Wars' fans."

Though Lucas farms out various "Star Wars" projects in what's known as the "`Star Wars' expanded universe," Filoni says that Lucas ensured "The Clone Wars" has "that `Star Wars' feeling."

Fans will also remember other animated series following the first time Lucas completed a "Star Wars" trilogy. After "Return of the Jedi," the series "Ewoks" and "Droids" ran in the late `80s.

Comedy Central also ran an earlier version of a "Clone Wars" animated series for three seasons beginning in 2003.

My almost 6 year old son really wanted to see it. I had tickets to Spamalot yesterday, with my dad, so DH took him to see it. DH said it was okay. DS loved it and manipulated DH into going to Toys R Us and buying him Clone Wars related toys afterwards.

Tony and I had last Friday off, so as a treat to the kids, we took them to the 12:01 a.m. showing. They had no clue where we were heading at 11 o'clock at night. They both thought some thing happened to a grandparent and we were heading to the hospital. Turning into the parking lot and they both had confussed looks on their faces. Got out of the car and Logans asking what are we doing. Tony said, we told you we'd go see Star Wars on Friday. Logan was, yea, but it's Thursday. Told him it started at 1 after midnight and we thought that they might like to be some of the first to see here. He was the happiest 13 year old around. Laney was excited, but not as much as Logan.

They had a blast walking around look at the different t-shirts fans had on. There were some people dressed up, had a Darth Vader there. The movie was really good. We all gave it 2:thumbsup:. They left the movie quoting some of the lines, already.

So, I went to the movies today and the person I was with got to choose the film ... and he chose Star Wars. I actually really enjoyed it, some of the dialogue and the delivery were really bad, but the animation and story were good.

I took my older son to see it yesterday. It was good but not great. I missed the written introduction at the beginning, but I thought the spoken introduction was a nice touch. I didn't care much of Anakin's padawan and I thought the droid humor was over done. The story was pretty good and I liked the animation.

We ended up with 2 free movie passes because the theater had trouble getting the movie started. When they did get it started, we had no sound so they ended starting it over after about 5-10 minutes.

I felt the same way. I remember the excitement it built watching the introduction scrolling. When I said something to DS10 (wise beyond his years) he said, "But Mom, little kids can't read. That's why they were talking." :yoda:  Makes sense to me now!

As to the movie...I thought it was pretty good, but the boys LOVED it. Walking out they decided we are going to buy the DVD.

That makes sense, but I think they still could have done something to leave it in.
