I've understood for quite awhile that if there is somewhere on site that you want to eat for dinner, it is best to make ADRs.
However, it has been several years since we have been to WDW and am wondering if ADRs are now necessary for non-character breakfasts. DH and I firmly believe in a well-balanced breakfast and I don't want to be stuck with pastries just because I didn't make ADRs. We haven't had problems in the past, but times change.
What have recent visitors experienced?

I'm with you about not having pastries alone for breakfast.

I've never made ADRs for non-character breakfasts. However, before I mosey over to the restaurant (such as Spoodles when we stay at the Boardwalk), I do call WDW-Dine (there's a button right on the room phone) to make sure that there's not a problem. There almost never is... however, I have seen places like Boatwright's or Olivia's get rather full at peak breakfast hours.

The good news is that the resort food courts (and the Boardwalk Bakery) have egg sandwiches and wraps as well as fruit and yogurt available.
