As usual, the nominations just prove the Golden Globes are completely insignificant, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is concerned more with star power than quality films.

Why are six movies nominated for the Best Motion Picture - Drama category, and "Into the Wild" is nowhere to be found? At least, Sean Penn deserves a bid for his directorial work.

I'm happy Viggo Mortensen is getting the praise he deserves, but "Eastern Promises" is simply not one of the best movies of the year. I can't imagine anyone, however, beating Daniel Day-Lewis in that category.

As for Nikki Blonsky, I'm glad she received a nomination because she was absolutely lovely in "Hairspray," but I can't see her winning. Ellen Page, who played the title role in "Juno," has too much buzz right now. Even Amy Adams ("Enchanted") is fresher in the voters' minds.

Perhaps the biggest travesty is that "Once" is not nominated for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical. I've written a lot about this film, which is truly an extraordinary effort in every way. The Golden Globes pride themselves in their broad categories, allowing more movies the chance at recognition. "Once" is probably the best musical in at least 25 years -- considerably better than any of the recent Broadway adaptations like "Rent," "Dreamgirls" and "Hairspray."

None of the many beautiful songs even were nominated for Best Original Song - Motion Picture. I challenge everybody to rent this DVD when it comes out on Dec. 18, and tell me it doesn't deserve a nomination in several categories.

Don't worry, though, it will get its deserved due in a few weeks at the Academy Awards.

"I'm not there" should have had more nominations..

But I am SOOOO glad Ricky Gervais and Extras are nominated! :number1::thumbsup: I am such an enormous fan of mr. Gervais. Steven Merchant and Karl Pilkington

We won the Emmy, hopefully he will win the Globe too :)

Yeay for Adam Beach for "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee." He's a fine actor who should have been nominated for an Oscar last year for "Flags of Our Fathers."

Yeah also for James Nesbitt for "Jekyll." What a great show. It was on BBC America, in case anyone missed it. It's now on DVD.

THFPA cancels Globes ceremony
News conference set to announce winners

By CYNTHIA LITTLETON

And now for something completely different...
The imbroglio over the fate of Sunday's Golden Globe Awards took several comical twists and turns on Monday as NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., Globes producer Dick Clark Prods. and the WGA tried to broker a deal that would allow the event and telecast to take place in some form.

Insiders said NBC brass came up with the idea of announcing the winners at an hourlong news conference at the Beverly Hilton hotel that would be covered live under the auspices of NBC News. NBC News writers are covered under a separate NABET contract and thus are not on strike against the net. Late in the day, HFPA confirmed that the Globes' traditional dinner and been scrapped and replaced by a 6 p.m. PST news conference (tape delayed for the West Coast) to announce the winners in 25 film and TV categories, to be covered live by NBC.

"We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007's outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television," said HFPA prexy Jorge Camara. "We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year's Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled."

WGA has promised for weeks that it will picket the Globes if HFPA and NBC tried to proceed with the traditional telecast of the awards ceremony. That threat prompted a declaration last week by SAG and PR reps for top stars that virtually of the town's name-brand thesps would be a no-show rather than cross a picket line.

HFPA's hope was to salvage some of Sunday's event by having a red-carpet procession and the traditional Globes parties at the Hilton. The notion was that stars would walk down the red carpet and proceed to the various parties at the Beverly Hilton. An HFPA official would read the film and TV winners on the live telecast. Cameras would then cut to star reactions from the party sites, and winners would have the option of heading to a press room to give reaction statements.

At one point on Monday, insiders said WGA was OK with the concept of the hourlong press conference/winners announcement special airing and agreed to hold its picket-fire. But those close to the situation said those talks hit a brick wall by midday as NBC sought to fill out the rest of its Sunday primetime schedule with two hours of Globes-retrospective specials from 7-9 p.m.and an "Access Hollywood" spesh at 10 p.m. making the rounds of Globes parties.

Despite HFPA's statement, there was little clarity about whether NBC would proceed with its plans for specials surrounding the news conference, which seem certain to draw WGA pickets. Nor were there assurances on Monday about whether the hosts of the primo Globes parties at the Hilton -- including NBC U and Focus Features, Warner Bros. and HBO --would proceed with their events. Moreover, there was no certainty about how enthusiastic A-listers and nominees would be to participating in the highly unorthodox, hastily assembled new Globes format.

The desperate maneuvers to salvage some semblance of the event underscores how determined NBC and HFPA are to save face amid the disruption of awards season tradition caused by the 11-week-old writers strike.

Dick Clark Prods. had sought a waiver or interim agreement with the guild to allow the show to proceed as usual without drawing pickets, but the WGA refused. NBC has been a prime target of the guild's campaign to aggravate the majors into resuming contract negotiations, which were broken off by the major congloms on Dec. 7.

NBC last week leaned on HFPA to postpone the event, but the press org was adamant about maintaining its traditional mid-January timing in order to maintain its place in the pre-Academy Awards season. The strategizing within NBC to deal with the awards has gone all the way up the line to NBC Universal prexy-CEO Jeff Zucker, who conferred with his top lieutenants and HFPA officials during the weekend to find the third-rail solution to its Globes picket quagmire.

Under normal circumstances, the Globes kudocast is understood to bring in about $15 million-$20 million in ad revenue for the Peacock. This year, NBC might not be hurt too much if the Globes are scrapped entirely from telecasting. This past Sunday's two-hour preem of the revival of campy sports competish reality skein "American Gladiators" pulled boffo demo ratings, and the Peacock is said to be prepping another two-hour "Gladiators" seg as a Plan B for Sunday night.

I think it would have been a bit strange to have the awards ceremony with out the stars there. Now they are going to have some hour long thing to announce the winners.

I'm not too surprised, at work we've been wondering if the show would go on. I'm still waiting to hear if I will be working on Sunday or not, now that the Globes won't go on.

As usual a lot of people will loose work without the Award show being telecast. I would think most of the vendors for the after parties have already been paid, so the ones mostly out of money there will be Vanity Fair, ET, InStyle, the movie studios and other party sponsors.

I feel bad for some of the new up-and-coming actors ... Ellen Page from "Juno", and Nikky Blonsky from "Hair Spray", that would have been making their first Globe appearances for their highly praised work in their respective films.

I guess this could be considered a victory for the writers, but more then just the studios will loose as well.

Did you catch the People's Choice Awards last night? It was Queen Latifah hosting in a quiet room. No audience...no celebrities. She did an excellent job, but it was the strangest thing hearing her announce the winners and no applause followed. They cut to a video tape of the winner doing a thank you speech. Several actors didn't say anything...held up signs and such...in support of the strike. It was very interesting.

I watched the real news conference not the "show" NBC did with Nancy O'dell and Billy Bush. I did see a couple of minutes of the NBC show, which I thought was bad. As a simple way to present the winners I thought the Hollywood Foriegn Press news conference wasnt too bad. What I did find embarrassing was some of the comments made by the various entertainment show hosts as they announced the winners. I can't comment so much on the winners since I haven't seen most of the films yet.
