"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6.

Friends -

Today marks one year from the date of my Whipple procedure that saved my life. On this important anniversary, I am so thankful for all of the love and support that I have received from my family, my friends, my church, my customers, and even complete strangers. Thank you to each of you who have supported me and my family with your prayers, your kind deeds, and your financial support! We have gone through what was truly, "the valley of the shadow of death", and have come out victorious - and for that I must also give thanks to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He never once left my side through all of this and he has worked through so many people that he has put in to my life.

I think back to all of the hard work that was put in to the spaghetti feed that really helped to live while our income had dwindled down to only what disability pay provides. Then there were all the people that showed up and took care of our yard doing gardening and keeping the yard under control while I was in the hospital - as well as those who came to decorate the house so that the girls could enjoy the Christmas season with a decorated home. Thank you, that meant so much to me and my family. I think back to others that God has put in to my life as well including my men's Bible study group, and Doctor Rich Lichti who ran a marathon to help raise money for our family. There are so many who were there for us that it is impossible to list everyone. Most recently though, we received a call from a local community member who told me that she was putting together a team to run the CIM marathon and wanted to raise funds to help us with our medical bills. Amazing!! God is so good. You can find out more about Kim and her team at http://www.active.com/donate/johnburkefund.

I hope that every one of you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I pray that you were able to share the day with your loved ones. I pray that my brush with pancreatic cancer and my original diagnosis of 6-12 months to live has served as a reminder to truly charish every day that you have here on Earth and to take the time to let your spouses, children, parents and friends how much you love and appreciate them. Also, if you did die tomorrow, are you certain as to your destination? If so, that is great and I give God thanks for that. If not, I pray that you take the time to check out a local Christian church to learn more about our Creator. I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through what I have gotten though if not for the ability to lean on him through it all.

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! May God bless you and your loves ones richly!

Your Friend -
John

Congratulation! You are an absolute testament to the power of prayer!! I remember reading your original post of your diagnosis that brought tears to my eyes. I was so happy to read of your updated status later, after the procedure! You are an inspiration in how you handled such a very rough period, and put your full confidence in God. God Bless you and your family this special holiday season - and for MANY more to come!

Praise God that your son was able to have the transplant. I hope that he is doing well now and that you are all are taking every day as a true blessing from our good God! If I have learned nothing else, I have learned not to take ANYTHING for granted!!

Thanks to everyone who have sent their well wishes not just now, but throughout my entire experience. It is amazing how many people I have gotten to know on Intercot and how I feel like I have a whole other family right here!! Thanks for keeping me and my family in your prayers!

Happy anniversary!

John - you are a true testimony to how a Christian should face their trials. It humbles me to read what you have faced and the way you faced it all with such strong faith.. then to see how I handle something as stupid and small as a flat tire or a bill that is just a bit higher than expected... we are to praise God in all things, and know that He will see us through ALL situations! I've heard it said that we may sometimes be the only 'Bible' someone sees in their life - if this is true in your case then you can stand with your head up knowing that God is pleased with you in the way you have 'read' to all those around you! "Well done thou good and faithful servant..." May God continue to bless you and your family John. Never change. I hope someday to meet you as I know I need to have people like you in my life.. people who will be reminders that my God is stronger than all I face! I have been told by several doctors that dh and I will never have children unless we see a specialist (for which we do not have the money or insurance to do)... your report of the doctors giving you only so long to live and you outliving that is a reminder that the doctors are NOT God and ultimately they do not know. So thank you John. You will continue to be in my prayers and I pray that this Christmas will be extra special to you and your family!

Thanks Brian! People are still amazed every time I tell the story of you flying here to visit all the way from Ontario when we had never even met. God is so awesome how he puts people in to our lives that we can so quickly become friends with.

I'm up early tomorrow for the marathon!! Pray that all the runners stay safe and raise a good deal of money to help us with our bills!!
