So half the refs in the NBA have broken NBA rules by gambling, BUT Mr. Stern is going to "let it slide" since these rules are outdated. He figures he will make gambling OK in some instances in the offseason. I don't see what is so hard about this. Either you want to ref and not gamble or gamble and keep out of being a pro sports official. I am done with the NBA this year before it even starts.

If it were a player or players, fines and suspensions would be flying all over the place. But, since it's the refs, the rules get changed so their gambling misdeeds are retroactively legal. Seems a tad hypocritical to me.

If I heard this correctly on the radio today, it's 'casino' gambling in question, not betting on sports/games and such.

I guess I don't see the big deal about letting them play some blackjack or putting some coins in a slot machine during the off-season. Am I misunderstanding?

We live in a free society. There is NOTHING the NBA can do to prevent officials from gambling. However, If they throw games to acheive an outcome then thats downright illegal. I also can see them not being able to gamble on basketball due to there being a conflict of interest. But to play casino games...You betcha they should be allowed.

Sure it is casino games, but it is against the NBA's own current rules. So, David Stern actually knows rules are being broken and says he is going to "let it slide." Really sents a good message he is in charge after one official's misconduct has tarnished the league in a way that is still unknown. It is not , to me, so much an issue of casino gambling and whether officials should be allowed to go "have fun in a casino," but seems, to me, to be an issue of enforcing current rules.

Good point.
