I was just looking at the YOAMD info on WDW website and clicked on the "No purchase instructions" link. It went through a whole paragraph of instructions on where to send your card to enter the drawing, etc...then the strange part...
"For residents of Canada, a mathematical skill-testing question must be correctly answered to win any prize."
What is that all about? Anyone have any explanation?

Canadian law prohibits lotteries or other games of chance (outside a licensed casino). So to make the contest legal in Canada, they have to make at least part of it a skill contest, but it will be a VERY simple math problem or problems. I may have a few details off, but that's the general idea.

Welcome to Canada!

Yes, to win a contest, you always have to answer a question, so it is really a game of "skill". The question is usually a really easy math one...happens for every contest (you don't have to answer when you win a bag of chips, but any major prize).

I won a pair of mouse ears in the mail-in YOMD, and they had to call me first, so I could answer the question and "qualify" for the prize!

Oh well, strange as it is, it is the law!

I've won a couple of prizes, one was a free trip to WDW. MY math question was a no brainer..something like (9+3)-4x5= (That wasn't my problem, but something like that.)

The best thing about winning prizes....we don't have to pay taxes on it!!!!

I think most of us in Canada consider this an archaic practice. I for one think it should be dropped because its been turned into a bit a of joke up here. Interesting enough, the law doesn't say it has to be answered on the first try so they could keep telling you to try again until you got it right with your calculator. And, it doesn't say that you can't have assistance, just that you have to answer it. Let's just say, nobody misses the question but technically you couldn't get the prize if you failed the question.

Actually some contests do state that the skill testing question must be done unaided.

But if they are on the phone, how do they know you don't have help?

I love Canada but they have some bizarre laws there. When I lived there (many moons ago) stores were not allowed to sell "colored" margarine because people might think it was butter. So they had to sell WHITE margarine - which looked just like lard, yuk - and little packets of dye that you could use to color it yellow.

Sign me up! I hate paying taxes in the state. But then again, I'm not complaining when I get my income tax check back at the end of the year!!

if they make the questions soooo easy..whats the point? they should just get rid of the stupid rule...

Uh, am I the only one who had to count on her fingers to figure out the math portion????
I for one wouldn't mind having to answer a simple math question if it means not paying the taxes on it! :mickey:

Where did you live and how long ago was that? I have never seen that one here!

The math rule is quite funny. We were finishing our basement and had A LOT of receipts from the big orange box store. There was a contest at the bottom of the receipt that if you entered you could win $1000. The skill testing question pops up and it is the same question every time you enter, so once you figured out the answer there was no skill required.

If there is a card you have to fill out in-store, most cashiers will just give you the answer so you don't have to stand there and figure the problem out.

I still haven;t figured out why some States and provinces (usually Quebec) are exempt from entering contests.
