Hi,
Am looking for reviews on moderately priced navigation systems for your Automobile.

It seems like the three popular brands are Garmin, Maggellen and Tom Tom.

Any recommendations!

Thanks

We have two Garmin GPS and have had several other Garmin products in the past. All have worked well. We now have a Nuvi 680 and a StreetPliot 550 both are great Garmin GPS units. Below is a link to a good GPS forum. My DH reads this forum for information before he buys a new GPS or if he has any GPS questions.

I have used the Magellan Roadmate and Garmin Streetpilot. I must say Garmin is much better, they update there maps yearly ($70 for update but used to be $150), the Magellan I had for 2 years never had a map update. I also hear how good the Garmin customer service is. I have been using the Garmin Streetpilot 2730 which has real time traffic and XM radio built in for a monthly fee of course. Garmin has a lot of models to choose from some with a lot of features and some with basic features for not so electronicaly minded people.

I have a Magellean 6000T which probably falls on the higher end for price, but I love it. It has been great the last 4 or 5 months I've been using it. The unit has real time traffic information and also works as a bluetooth handsfree phone device.

I was just talking to the salesman at Staples about these. Apparently he did a lot of research before he bought his dad one. He recommended Garmin or TomTom. He bought the Garmin, which Staples didn't even have. Plus my sister has a Garmin and it works pretty good. Except it tried to take us the long way through Boston instead of around it.

I didn't realize you had to pay for the map upgrade though. The salesman said they were automatically upgraded because they have their own satelites. Was this not true?

For as long has I have had a GPS in my car you always need to pay for a map udate cd/dvd. Other then the gps itself thats where they make alot of there money.

YES, Luckily your other sister (ME) without the GPS has her own good iinstincts and guided everyone to the concert the quickest and safest way.
I guess I have a GPS built into my brain!!!
Explains my big head!:mickey:

So that's why it's larger than mine?

We just got the Magellan RoadMate 2200T and love it so far. You can upgrade it to include traffic. We don't use it all the time, but it has come in handy many times.

I'm looking into one for my Paris trip.

Will I need one from Europe?

I know with Garmin you can buy maps for Europe and install them on the gps.

This what is covered in Europe with the latest garmin map dvd. You can install Europe maps on a gps you buy in USA.

DW and I are looking at either the TOMTOM ONE or the Garmin StreetPilot C340.

By reading this thread it serems that everyone that has a Garmin is happy with it. Any pro TomTom people out there? Anyone use the Garmin C340?

Thanks. We are looking at the lower cost units.

We have had a Garmin Streetpilot for at least 5 years now and love it. We have no complaints. It talks to you with the directions in addition to giving them to you on screen. It can tell you what attractions, hotels, restaurants etc are in the area that you are in.
Just this past year we had to go online and update the program. It only cost about $100.
I have to say this little piece of equipment has made all of our diving vacations pleasant.

Thanks for all the input on the gps systems. We bought one last night, we did not get fancy and went with the Garmin Streetpilot C330. It is extremely easy to use and although we wont' get alot of chances to try it in the big cities it will help DD get to her gymnastics class for cheering since she has gotten lost twice!!

I borrowed my parent's TomTom for a drive to Disneyland in February and it took me the wrong direction both going and coming! Luckily I can read a map, which is what I ended up using the TomTom for ... my dad got a chuckle out of it when I explained that I would stick with a $3 Rand McNally old-school Navigation Device. I definitely vote no on the TomTom from my 1 experience, although he claims to never have had a problem.

BUT -- i love the Garmin and will get one eventually -- but since I would rather let someone else fly a plane with me having a cocktail then drive my car, it's not high on my list! :mickey:
