If the breakfast buffet is anywhere near as good as the one they serve there to guests who took the Sunrise Safari tour, this will be a big hit.

They put out a wonderful assortment of juices, fruit, pastries, cereals, bagels, eggs, potatoes, meats, cheeses.... I've gotta stop now; suddenly I'm very hungry! :eat:

If this is Donald's Safari Breakfast, does that mean that Donald & friends will no longer be at Restaurantosaurus for breakfast? We just went for the 1st time in October & loved it!

That's pretty cool. But there's only going to be two CS places (for lunch and dinner) from August 20th onward, right? And another slightly ridiculous question: so that means the last day Tusker House will be open as a CS place will be the 19th, right?

Mickey91

Well, that sounds yummy. Too bad they had to take away the best CS in all of AK though. That doesn't leave much choice for the CS there.

I found the following posted on another site today. I am sad to hear this as the Tusker House had great food and was one of our favorite at AK.

Tusker House is closing on August 20 and will reopen on November 17 as a full serve buffet restaurant.

When Tusker House reopens, it will offer the "Donald's Safari Breakfast" from 8:00am thru 10:30am.

Buffet Lunch/Dinner will be served starting at 11:30am until park closing.(Only breakfast will feature characters.

Note that "Donald's Breakfastosaurus in Restaurantosaurus will be discontinued on November 5. That dining venue will continue to be counter serve from 10:30am till park closing.

I think it makes sense to move Donald & Co. to Tusker House. I thought Restaurantasaurus was a little dark and small for the character breakfast. Tusker House will be more condusive to character interaction and a buffet.

Ok, I read an earlier post that Tusker House was closing. Today, I tried making ressies for Breakfastosaurus for Nov 6th. The CM told me that Breakfastosaurus was closing Nov 5th and moving to the Tusker House (opening Nov 17th there as a new Donald character breakfast. This is to make room for the new character breakfast to open where Breakfastosaurus was (Yeti, I would assume). No wonder they wouldn't let me book breakfastosaurus earlier this week (they just kept telling me that it was due to it not being exactly 180 days out). Ok, now it makes sense! I had to book Rainforest instead, which is ok, but I sure will miss Donald this trip:(

It's too bad that you'll miss Donald. I agree that the breakfast is great for Donald fans but judging from the complaints on that breakfast, it could use some overhauling. We really enjoyed it.

To bad it wasn't closing completley!

We had the SINGLE worst character experience at Breakfastosaurus. We were hustled in and out within 30 minutes. We barely had enough time to sit down before the charaters were wisked by us.

I hope that it gets a good makeover in the move. We love Donald but that breakfast we had ruined Breakfastosaurus for us. Keeping my fingers crossed for better things with Donald! :fingers:

Thanks for the update!

Wow glad to see that we will be able to sqeeze in Breakfastosaurus with Donald before it closes. We have never been there. Hope it is good after reading some of the negative comments on this thread about it. But to be able to see Donald is worth the hassle and it will get us in the park early!

Sorry that the Tusker house is closing before we get there. Oh well can't have everything.

We were going to try Donald's Breakfastosaurus in December, but this new change sounds much better. I always have a hard time finding Daisy (without a huge line at MGM), so this will be perfect!

Adding it to our dining list right now!

I know this gives a new dining option, but they are taking away the best CS in the entire WDW to do it - not a fair swap in my estimation....

On a side note, any word on the street dancers and drummers that performed outside at Tusker House? Will they be gone? We always enjoyed these acts during lunch there.

Seems like a strange time to close a CS during the free dining promotion. I do understand that they want the new location for the holiday season but still there will be alot of unhappy free diners.

That is our absolute favorite place to eat lunch in all the world. Now there is NOWHERE worthwhile to eat in AK. I HATE THE DINING PLAN!

Well, I was going to go to AK for one morning and then have lunch at Tusker House but I guess we will just leave the park and maybe go to Kona or something. I was looking forward to the Salmon. I bet Flame Tree will be packed in Sept/Oct. I think the new breakfast is good but I just wish they wouldn't take a GREAT counter service choice away. Oh well, they probably have facts and figures to back up the decision.

I, too, will miss Tusker House as a counter service establishment. It was a cool, welcoming and affordable place to have lunch. Does anyone know how much this character buffet is going to cost?

I'll bet it's a lot of $$$$.

And, what's going to happen with the old Breakfastasaurus location?

The loss of this excellent CS option is not good news. Hopefully, there will be some creative items included in the new buffet. Perhaps we can convince Disney to offer the current Tusker House menu items at the CS section of the
Yak & Yeti, which needs to open in time to accomodate the free DDP crowds.

Tusker House was always a place we went to in the morning for a peaceful , uncrowded breakfast. Definitely the best CS in WDW. I am sorry to see this change, but I always wondered if they would do something else with that large building that was always so empty in the off season/ off hours. WDW does not like calm, peaceful , uncrowded food service areas. No $$$$$ being made.

I think this a good thing. One of the bigger complaints I read here about AK is the lack of sit down dining, a complaint I agreed with. With the conversion of Tusker House and the opening of Yak & Yeti, we'll have two more options for sit down and the same number of CS options. I also think the character breakfast will benefit from being moved to Tusker House.

While TH was good for what it was, I always wished they'd put in a restuarant that went with the theme and served African food. If the buffet does have some creative, African or at least African-inspired food, I'll be very happy about this change.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Why do they have to get rid of the only good place to eat in Animal Kingdom? And replace it with, ugh, another buffet???

I loved their turkey wrap sandwich with the corn chowder! Now I only have the choice of BBQ, or Disney's infamous "pizza".

Well, since they have gotten rid of Tarzan Rocks! and Tusker House, I will have no reason to stay there more than half a day at the most...

How disappointing.

Tusker House used to be our place to eat breakfast before the safari. Now where else would breakfast be offered, if restauarantasaurus (aka McDonald's) doesn't open til 10:30am?

Probably only option is that coffee cart before the entrance?

WDW food gets more boring and uninteresting every day . . .

1) And your point is ?
2) Seriously, I fully agree with you.
3) Due to the DDP,
. . . menu items are less unique
. . . many specialty items have disappeared
. . . food is getting too common and alike in the eateries
4) Unfortunately, WDW is giving the public what it wants
. . . ability to graze
. . . ability to eat lots and lots of food
. . . ability to have volume instead of uniqueness

Any news on how this will effect the DDE card? I always enjoying going to lunch at AK because it was the only park where they took the DDE at counter service restaurants. If they are turning Tusker House into a buffet and opening a full service portion of the Yak and Yeti, does this spell the end for counter service discount with the DDE at AK?

I'm disappointed that this went through. I guess the emails that us Intercotees sent weren't enough :( . I'm sure that the breakfast will be an improvement over the current one but it really doesn't make sense to get rid of the best counter service restaurant. Even if they do keep the great food that they currently serve, it will be a lot more expensive. I'm happy that I will get to eat there one last time during free dining.

This is the worst Disney news I've heard since they closed down AE. This was the best restaurant Disney had that was BRAGGED on a Food Network show, as being an out of the ordinary counter service. It was always full, and had the best food.

Its really disappointing. Disney has lost our money at AK, I'm pretty sure of it. We'll ride the few rides there, then leave. Disney is all about the money, and not making people happy. They already had a character meal there, why go and "fix" something thats not broken?

I am very disappointed, and if they don't serve corn chowder anywhere else in the park, we won't be eating at AK.

Hopefully Flame Tree or someone else takes over the menu, because it was great.

I'm disappointed that this is happening. I hadn't heard anything about it since the rumour so I had forgotten about the possibility of the change. I've witnessed changes at WDW many times, and this is a minor change in the grand scheme of things. It makes sense from a business standpoint because it adds a TS to AK that will no doubt be popular in a park that has a shortage of TS. I hope that the new buffet serves at least some of the food that is currently served at Tusker House. So long Tusker House. You've been a great place to eat for the past 9 years, and you'll be missed.

I too enjoyed Tusker House counter sevice( great food, for animal kingdon). I am kind of looking forward to the new character buffet here. I really didnt enjoy the other one in animal Kingdom- it was rushed and had little on the menu/buffet to eat ,( in ccmparision to other breakfast buffets by disney). I didnt care much fro the decor of the other restaurant. I did however really get into eating my chicken at the Tusker House outside and watching The African Dancer performances.. That was a blast- I do hope they keep these guys around to entertain as you eat( some where else in AK anyway). So positives and negatives to all new things- but change is always good!

Why do you assume that? If Disney thinks the chicken will draw people to the buffet, it'll be there. I've got to say, I'm not a big buffet person, but Disney's buffets are really good! They're much better in quality and choice than most other buffets.

With the new CS option, I think this is a very good move for Disney, I always thought the location lent itself to a sitdown or buffet. I for one am definitely looking forward to it.

Quite frankly, I hate the fact Disney is turning Tusker House into a buffet. While I would agree it could use a bit of a facelift, my family and friends love the current offerings Tusker House provides.

Tusker House is one of the best places to eat in Animal Kingdom, and very affordable. They have a wonderful selection to choose from, which is sure to please almost anyone. Even though my family has been staying at WDW each year since 2000, we first discovered this restaurant about two years ago after seeing a special about AK on the Travel Channel. We enjoy eating at TH and was already on our agenda for this September. We are truly disheartened about this change to a buffet.

To me and my family, buffet means about $20 or so per person. Other than snacks, there are few places in AK to get a decent meal. Additionally, AK tends to be one of the most hot and humid parks due to all the foliage. Who wants to eat a heavy buffet meal in the middle of the day like that? Other than the ol’ mighty dollar, what is WDW thinking???

Please don’t change Tusker House. Give it a face lift and think of the consumer!

Maybe if enough of us write in, we can at the very least, get them thinking.

[

I'm sorry to say that Disney IS thinking of the consumer by thinking of the almighty dollar. WDW has tried to offer new "fast food" services, but they have all failed financially. Look at the Noodle Station in MK, or the food court in the Land. They have never, and will never fare as well as Cosmic Ray's and the Electric Umbrella.

Now, what will become of the Tusker House? We don't know. But I do know that if the Tusker House was a financial success, they will find a way to incorporate those menu items elsewhere. If they weren't, they won't. They don't take away your favorite restaurants and rides just to make you mad...they do it for sound financial reasons.

Personally, I hope a limited version of the Tusker House menu will be seen at Tamu Tamu. And I hope Restaurantosaurus becomes more then an overpriced McDonalds.

This is VERY unfortunate. I totally disagree that turning the Tusker House into a buffet is a good idea. Don't get me wrong, Disney has great buffets and I do enjoy them, just NOT for every meal! The Tusker House had the best counter service in all of WDW. It was a nice, cool, shady place to eat healthy food and still feel like an adult. Character meals are fun once or twice a trip but they get old really fast, especially when you are traveling without children. Not to mention these character meals are a time consuming "expereince." I know that's what they are supposed to be, however there are days I would rather just eat light and enjoy the park. Personally, if Disney wants another buffet in AK, they should just go and build one; or renovate Restrauntosarus to accomdate their needs. Leave Tusker House alone! If its not broke, don't fix it!:soapbox:

Definitely looking forward to trying this. It seems as if the food and character interaction will be top notch!

I tried to make them yesterday and was told that they were not accepting reservations for Donald's Safari Breakfast yet because it wasn't in the computer system. She tried to find out when, but could not get me an answer, other than try back another time. Anybody else have more information?

Well, it's not the end of the world, just life as we know it! :sadwave:

Respectfully, that AK will end up with the same number of CS venues is not the same thing, especially if the BBQ sauce at Flame Tree repeats on you (as it does me), and you go to the park with people who evince no interest whatsoever in anything Yak and Yeti CS may have to offer. [I personally am looking forward to see what they have to offer, but I am quite a bit more adventurous!]

Since I am able to for many other places I want to eat (on the order of 12 last trip) I am certainly capable of making an ADR for a TH buffet. But it certainly won't be for a Character Meal. At least I'll still be able to get a Cinnamon Roll and coffee at the walk-up bakery window, even though I will no longer be welcome to enjoy it indoors.

Seriously, I really hate being negative about this, but I certainly echo the feelings that it was nice to have a place that you could decide at the last minute to eat, and enjoy food well above CS average. I love the salmon, and I also hope that we'll see it, the corn chowder, the chicken and other selections as part of the new buffet. I may find myself embracing the new TH TS, but I will also mourn the TH CS. :crying:

I want to pipe in here for a second! We went on the Sunrise Safari a few years ago and had the breakfast buffet at Tusker House that capped off the experience. While it was on a smaller scale than would be offered to the general public (serving maybe 60-70 people at once), it was wonderful! It had a combination of North American breakfast favorites (eggs, breakfast meats, cereal, pancakes, etc.), it also offered up some African dishes and tropical fruit in addition to the normal melons and citrus fruit we usually see at buffets.

As for the lunch, unless they were to move the rotisseries to another venue, I don't see them not offering the entrees we've come to like there over the past few years. From what I've seen on the Food Network and Travel Channel, these were not your run of the mill rotisseries. They're not about to throw out that investment.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the new buffets have to offer.

I think I would look forward to this more if there were different characters. Maybe Timon, Rafiki, Mulan & someone from Hercules or Emperor's New Groove.

I had the same issue and when I asked if I could book Donald's Safari Breakfast instead, they said they could not accept bookings yet? Is this correct? Do I need to wait until November when Tusket House / Donald's Safari Breakfast opens to make a booking? We are also on the DDP.

... they said they could not accept bookings yet? Is this correct? Correct.

Do I need to wait until November when Tusket House / Donald's Safari Breakfast opens to make a booking? Probably not that long, but they will not likely start accepting reservations until they actually start the conversion process to make sure they will re-open on the planned date.

Figment!

Just called and the first operator said it was all booked up for Sunday the 18th of November. Had a weird feeling about the phone call so I tried a second operator. I was the first person to book for the 18th and I have the confirmation #. All my ADR's are planned and we are just waiting for the 16th.

Thanks for posting the update this morning!

We called the other day and got reservations for breakfast on 11/27 at 10:25. We figure this way, if we're able to take our time maybe we can get some breakfast with the characters and maybe get a little taste of the lunch items too. But we are thinking about switching to lunch. In either case, I'll have a review for this fairly new restaurant when we get back!
