Hi everyone.

Anyone know if tipping Mousekeeping with Disney Dollars is OK?

According to the other very debated thread of "how much to tip a housekeeper" Disney says that tipping a housekeeper is not allowed(even though I and so many others will continue), that it is a non tip position. So I would safely assume no to Disney dollars also. One thought though, do you really think housekeeping would want Disney dollars? That would limit them to what they could use the extra cash for, they would have to spend it on property. Yes, they could use it to buy there lunch or snack on their breaks but maybe they need it for something else other than that. School clothes, mortgage payment, car payment, ect.. Why give it back to Disney? I know that sounds anti-Disney (believe me it's not! I live and breathe Disney!) but if I worked for Disney and someone gave me a tip with Disney dollars I would be a little upset. But that is just my opinion.

I would agree. I suppose it is better than nothing - especially if you technically aren't required to tip anyway - but what if they needed the money they earned for their bills? Electric bill, car payment etc? And then all they got was Disney Dollars? What would they do? DH and I have both "done our time" in the service industry and let me tell ya - those "tips" aren't just for snacks - that's how those folks pay their way.....

Sorry, this question came across the wrong way. I didn't know if they could exchange Disney Dollars for real money. I wasn't thinking they would only use them for Disney Products. My mistake!

Even if the CMs CAN exchange the DDs for real money, I think it would still be a relative negative if you did it. You're then making the person go out of her way to get her money, versus just having it in her pocket.

I love using DDs. I think it's fun. But think about why you are giving a tip ... you are saying "Thank you." If you want to express your thanks to the person, try to realize that it's somewhat lessened by the fact that they now have to take another step to get their money. Leaving the tip in DDs is fun for you, but it's an annoyance to the CMs receiving them.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure if you asked 100 Mousekeepers and asked them to choose a DD tip or no tip at all, all 100 would choose the company cash over no cash at all.

But if you are leaving a tip to be nice to the person, be really nice and don't make her work for it any more than she already did.

By the way, I live right next to Atlantic City, so I know lots of casino workers (there are only about 50,000 or so!). Those who work on the casino floor resign themselves to getting chips as tips because that's what the guests have at that moment. The people who work away from the casino floor are happy to get any money at all, but tend to feel annoyed at being tipped in chips (or worse yet, coin tokens) rather than cash. They have to take time after punching out to go to a special office at their workplace (an office that isn't right next to their locker room or anything that convenient!) to cash in their chips.

So anyway, that's my answer to your question. I think it's a very normal and understandable question ... please don't be put off by understandable answers.:mickey:

I don't think it's a bad question either. It's one that I had asked myself when planning our vacation savings. I decided to go with good old US currency for many of the same reasons stated above.

There is no way to exchange Disney Dollars for cash (at least not for tourists, so I'm assuming it's the same for employees), so I think regular currency would probably be a better choice for tipping.:mickey:

Really? I always thought you could get regular money in return, as in a dollar for a dollar. I thought when you go to Guest Relations they would exchange Disney Dollars for regular money.

1) Correct.
2) You can trade-back any Disney Dollars.
3) Almost all registers can, and will, do this.
4) No receipt is necessary.

In the the economy went belly up early 2002 (rates cut, Enron, WorldCom, etc) I found myself unemployed and it was hard to find a "career" that college prepared me for. So I actually worked in Atlantic City for a little while. It was worse than the JIYI make-over w/o Figment. :D

I parked cars and brought them back. It was a tipped position. I had to stop myself from force feeding the casino chips to those (few, thankfully) that tipped me that way instead of a green piece of paper with George Washington's face on it. I actually preferred not being tipped. It was a waste of time b/c we wait for our turn to go grab a car and then it is waisted. If I parked a car, I'd make $ b/c there is a bonus for # of cars parked.

Lets expand ... would you also think it wise to tip with DD at a meal? Why just mousekeeping? Why not the valet parking at the deluxe resorts too? I don't know the answer people will come up with to my proposal, but I have an feeling about it.

Purely my opinion, but after living 11+ years in Las Vegas .. . .

It seems ok if you wouldn't tip with any other means. After all, cash is king!

It would be my understanding that anything would be considered a bonus beyond nothing.

I always tip something, regardless of currency.
