<<Big Fun for Little Sprouts>>

While many avid gardeners and weekend weeders alike may find the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival intriguing, it is often overlooked by many Guests as something for the littler Guest to enjoy.  In addition to the activities, seminars, floral displays, and concerts (which may mostly appeal to adolescent and older Guests) the festival still offers big fun for the little sprouts.  The 17th Annual Festival is offering some new ways for pint-sized planters to enjoy the festivities along with their full-grown gardeners.  This year's festival offers a newly expanded Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden and a new butterfly house experience.   This newly expanded children's area features colorful topiaries of Tinker Bell and friends from Walt Disney Pictures’ latest DVD release “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure”. New characters on display (along with returning fairy favorites) are Vidia and Terence.  Industrious tikes will want to check out Tinker Bell’s Nook area which features hands-on activities for children.   Another new feature of this area this year is Fawn’s Butterfly House.  Guests who have previously enjoyed Minnie’s Magnificent Butterfly House in past festivals will want to check out the new butterfly garden for a familiar experience with a new theme.  Hundreds of butterflies will flit among the lush foliage, and guests can wander and watch as winged beauties of multiple species light on flowers filled with nectar and as caterpillars emerge from their chrysalis in a special discovery exhibit.  The festival continues through May 16, 2010.

<<Gliding Around the World with Faline>>

Last August, my husband and I participated in the Segway Tour at Epcot. We’re very excited to try this though I, for sure, am a bit apprehensive that I might not be able to master the machine! The thought of riding something that only has two wheels seems a bit daunting but, in the end, I need not have worried.

It’s not quite 8 when we arrive but folks are already being let through the gate for this morning’s extra magic hour. I inquire as to where we should check in for our tour and we’re told we should report to Guest Relations. We check in and are told that there is a tour group that is a bit earlier than the one we scheduled and they will put us into that tour. Okay. Apparently, there was a party of six scheduled for this earlier tour but they have not yet arrived. Our tour ends up being a total of 4 participants. This is pretty lucky for us and makes it a pretty intimate tour. Along with my husband and myself, there is a mother and daughter from Connecticut. Our tour partners have both ridden Segways before so we are the only two who are totally inexperienced.

First, we pick out helmets to wear. Following that, we watch an instructional video. That is followed by a demonstration of the various controls and monitors on the machine. Our anticipation is definitely mounting! We can hardly wait to actually try the machine!

We move out to another area where it’s time for some practice. First, we need to practice getting on and off the Segway. We each quickly accomplish this. Now we need to practice moving forward and back in a straight line and, most importantly, we need to practice how to stop. When we demonstrate we can go in a straight line and stop, we move on to practice turning to the left, right, turning all the way around, and weaving through cones. When we appear to be adept at that, we practice going up and down inclines and being able to better control the machine. We even receive instruction on how to go over an obstruction such as a hose lying across our path and under a low hanging tree branch.

Finally, it’s time to actually head out of doors. This is exciting and scary at the same time! There are people out and about in Epcot as we start our practice session in Future World before riding into World Showcase. We head across the front of Mexico and head around World Showcase from there. In Italy, we weave in and out of the columns. Along the way, we make several stops and learn more the pavilions we stop in.

When we reach the American Pavilion, we are allowed to use the area off to the right (as you face the pavilion) as “free ride” space. By this time, we’re beginning to get pretty comfortable on the machines.

As we approach France and take the turn into the United Kingdom, we’re beginning to feel like pros! Weaving through the United Kingdom paths is quite easy and feels very natural. Soon, we’re entering the populated areas of Future World. By this time, having people around is no longer scary and we’re feeling like we will easily be able to stop without running into someone who might step into our path. All too soon, we are back at our starting point where it’s time to disembark and reluctantly return our Segway.

At the end, we’re provided with pins and walk away. Already, we are talking about wanting to take another Segway tour! All in all, I would highly recommend the Epcot Segway tour!
