Visiting Fort Wilderness in December

My family and I are going to WDW Dec. 3-8 and we're hoping to take a little time to visit Fort Wilderness while we're there. I've heard that a lot of the campers put up elaborate Christmas decorations in December, and we were thinking about going to see the displays. But, we've only been to FW once and that was to eat at Trails End. We rode the boat to FW from MK, so we didn't drive around the resort at all, just stayed mostly on the end by the marina.

My questions are: We will have a rental car and will probably drive to FW. Are we allowed to drive through the campground to see the decorations? If not, what do we do with our car and what's the best way to get around? Would we be able to just walk easily?

And also, will there be many decorations up that early in December?

We're WDW veterans and always looking for something new to do on our trips, and I thought this would be a neat way to see the decorations and FW! Thanks for any advice you can offer!

You can't drive around the campsites. You either have to take the internal bus system, walk, rent a golf cart, or ride a bike (which is my favorite when we camp here). There is a parking lot at one end, and then you can explore by the mode of transport you choose. I've never been in Dec., so I don't know how early they decorate, but there are always decorations of some sort, and, I would think the Christmas ones would be up then. There were some up when we went in January and then, even in February.

The best time to see the Christmas decorations is at night. Since you cannot drive your own car around FW, your options may be limited. The bike barn, where you would rent a bike, closes relatively early and it is economically not feasible to rent a golf cart for an entire day just to use for a few hours. You may be limited to getting on and off the buses and walk around the loops that have the most decorations.

You will have a great time visiting FW!! The decorations folks put up on their sites is incredible. It will be worth the time, so enjoy it
