Discontinuing Disney Dollars?
Does anyone know if they are phasing out Disney Dollars? This year I decided to start buying Disney Dollars for our trip in November. Everyone has an envelope, even Dh and myself. I keep going to our local Disney Store to buy more and they keep telling me they are out and they do not know when they are getting more. They also keep pushing me towards the gift cards but we like the dollars. I do not want to collect tons of gift cards and fear adding $$ to them. Any intel as to what may be going on?

I am certainly no insider and it is always possible that I may have missed something but to the best of my knowledge nothing has been announced that they are ending them. Given the problems with the Disney Stores and the fact that Disney just purchased them back I would suspect it is more of a supply issue rather than a discontinuance.
On a side note, there are so many of these dollars out there that I think it would be tough to just suddenly discontinue them.

They just came out with new Disney Dollars for Mickey's 80th, so I'm certain they aren't discontinuing them. If you Google Disney Dollars 2008 you can see what the new ones look like. My Disney Store is hit-or-miss with them as well . . . but they are definitely still out there with new ones being released.

I'm pretty positive they aren't discontinueing them as well. I know you can purchase them from Guest Relations.

I don't think they are discontinuing them, but the past couple trips I've taken to the mall to pick some up, they haven't had any. They keep telling me that they're getting more, and they are MIckey-themed, but they never have any.
Probably has to do with the restructuring, like another poster mentioned.

I'm glad to hear that I am not the only one having trouble finding Disney Dollars. It is a bit frustrating as I am trying to surprize the children with them on our next trip and the scarcity of them is not helping my plans. Hopefully they will restock the stores soon.

I had the same problem and was told the same thing. They are out and they don't know when they will get them in again. Weird, some sort of line they have been told to pass on.

1) They are not being discontinued.
2) You can get them in person or via mail.
. . . in-person: any cash register has them
. . . mail: dial 407-W-DISNEY and ask for "ticketing and disney dollars" dept
NOTE: Not only do they inspire spending, but a lot of folks save them as souvenirs. Can you spell H-U-G-E-P-R-O-F-I-T? They cost cents to make and people buy them for $1, $5, $20 and just put them in a scrap book. H-U-G-E-P-R-O-F-I-T. I am not critical. It is a good plan. The US Post Office does the same thing with commemorative stamps.

My inquiry was due to the fact that many of the Disney stores do not have them in stock and do not seem to replenishing their rather diminished supply; therefore making difficult to buy them in person. I usually pop in unexpectedly and grab $20 - $40 worth and tuck them into the children's envelopes. As far as the mail is concerned I do not see the point of paying shipping for Disney Dollars, seems to be a waste of $$ to me. If they are such huge profit reapers one would think that the company would want to keep a rather decent supply avaliable for their consumers.
My thought was that buy decreasing the avaliability of Disney Dollars they are forcing people to buy gift cards (something they push towards every time I inquire about Disney Dollars). One would also think that the cost of producing Disney Dollars is more than the production of gift cards (think five $20 or 10 $10 Disney Dollars to equal $100 vs. one gift card for the same amount) so by eliminating the Disney Dollars and replacing them slowly with gift cards they are in fact increasing their profit margins and the gift cards are reusable thus supporting WDW move towards greener business practices.

At the cash registers, we do not have them. The ones we have have already been used and are in less than perfect condition. They also collect receipts from us about every hour or so, so they aren't always in the drawers. Plus, there isn't consistency in what we have - we may have some older ones, some newer ones. But we never actually sell them.
