May 7, 1917 – Actor David Tomlinson (best known for his role as George W. Banks in Disney’s 1964 “Mary Poppins”) was born in England.
May 7, 1922 – Seasoned actor of stage, screen and television, Darren McGavin was born in Spokane, Wa. McGavin’s Disney credits include the role of John Jay Forest in “The High Flying Spys,” and Timothy Donovan in “Donovan’s Kid.” He also portrays Mayor Ragsdale in Disney’s live-action feature “Hot Lead and Cold Feet,” and Duke in the feature “No Deposit, No Return.”
May 7, 1940 – Russian composer Peter Llyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in present day Udmurtia, Tchaikovsky’s “The nutcracker Suite would later be used in Disney’s 1940 “Fantasia.” The original piece would be shortened and the order of the movements rearranged to fit the animated action.
May 7, 1950 – The first engine officially ran on the Carolwood Pacific Railroad, Walt Disney’s backyard train at his Carolwood Drive home in Holmby, Hills, Ca. The 2,615 feet of track includes a 46 foot long trestle and a 90 foot long tunnel under his wife Lillian’s flower bed! Walt controlled the track from a special barn that acts as a central headquarters for the railroad’s operation.
May 7, 1955 – At the Disney Studios, actor Tim Considine read for the part of Marty for a new TV special to be called “The Adventures of Spin and Marty.” He would be called back 2 days later for a film test and eventually be hired…for the role of Spin.
May 7, 1961 – Part 1 of the 2-part Disney TV show “Andrews’ Raiders,” titled secret mission, aired. (Part2 aired May 14, 1961)
May 7, 1973 – Neel Tyree replaced Jerry Siggins and began performing with the Dapper Dans at WDW.
May 7, 1993 – The World Roller Hockey League Rink opened at Disney-MGM Studios.
May 7, 1999 – At Disney’s El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, Ca. a fully restored 35mm CinemaScope, Dolby Stereo print of “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea”, was shown.
May 7, 2007 – Disneyland’s Golden Horseshoe performer Fulton Burley passed away at age 84 in California. In 1962, while performing at the Hacienda Hotel in Las Vegas, Nv. Burley received a call from his pal Wally Boag, with whom he had worked as a contract player at MGM. Wally, who had been performing in the Golden Horseshoe Revue for seven years, needed to replace one of his fellow cast members. Burley went on to appear in the popular show through Oct. 1986! He also supplied the voice of Michael, the Irish parrot, for the “Enchanted Tiki room” attraction. Burley was honored as a Disney Legend in 1995.
