How does the umbrella at MGM work? Last time we were there we tried and tried, but it just wouldn't rain. Maybe it was broken.

Last time I was there (98) it worked fine. Whenever we would go under it rain would start pouring. They may have changed it though. not sure

There is a square plate thing under it. My understanding is that when someone stands on it, it rains.

I honestly don't remember seeing the umbrella when we were last at MGM/Disney Studios -- but that was 4 yrs ago and I've slept since then (My DH says I have business cards to make sure I remember my name

). Where is the umbrella located? We're finally going back in about 20 days and I'd love to spring it on the kids.

I can't remember exactly where it is, but it's somewhere toward the back of the park, in the Streets of America area, probably somewhere near Lights, Motors, Action.

When we were there July 2006, the umbrella didn't rain.

On my trip before that, back in 2000, I'm almost positive there was a button you pressed on the umbrella's handle that made it rain. We'll have to check it out again on this next trip and hope that it works this time.

In past trips you had to stand on the square and hold the handle......

Last Nov. it was not there.........

This brings back one of my most embarassing Disney moments. I was trying to show my sister and friend how the thing worked. I just could not get it to rain. Standing nearby signing autographs was Pinocchio. He came over and showed me how it worked and then laughed at me as did the little kids waiting in line.

It still makes me blush and laugh to think about it today.

We stumbled upon it last trip right by the street that looks like San Fransisco, we were waiting to see Lightning McQueen and MAter and I saw it. Took DD picture but no water out of it.

I have never saw it. We forgot to look for it this past trip a week ago. I did see Mater and Queen. Darn, and it was so hot.

If you're standing with your back to Lights, Motor, Action, look towards the Streets of America and it will be a lightpost straight in front of you, with the umbrella attached to the lightpost. Right next to where Herbie's parked. There's a square sensor pad on the ground below the umbrella, and standing on that turns on the water. There's no button on the umbrella or anything. However, you do need to stand on the sensor for a few seconds before it actually starts to rain...it doesn't come on immediately.

We were there about the same time, and it was working. It is located across from the entrance to the Lights Camera Action, and across from Herbie the Love Bug.

Perhaps they have the water on only seasonally?
