Are you staying in the city -it can be pricey? If you stay on the outskirts it's very easy to take the train in. I suggest you go to tripadvisor and start your search there. If it were me I'd stay in Dupont or Georgetown area which would put you relatively close to everything. There may be some DC experts that could give you better advice -I'm just a casual traveler there so aren't familiar with the areas to stay away from.
We have stayed at the Holiday Inn near the Capital. It was affordable and easy to walk to the Capital and the Smithsonians. It was a block from the Air and Space.
Our favorite DC hotel is the Holiday Inn at the Capital, which is a block away from the Air and Space Museum as well as a Metro stop. We have also stayed at the Hyatt Capital Hill and another Holiday Inn near there. We weren't as happy with those locations.
Definitely not an expert on DC accommodations, but we stayed the Homewood Suites near Thomas Circle (north DC) last summer. It gets good reviews on Tripadvisor and is well located--in a safe area just a few blocks to all the restaurants and shops in Dupont Circle, as well as two Metro stations. It's also only 7 blocks to the White House area, we just walked there one morning. They put out a breakfast buffet in the morning and have a light meal served each evening, Monday through Thursday, along with wine and beer. An added plus (for us) was that we could use our Hilton Honors points to get a few free nights (a definite bonus in pricey DC!)
