My kids have been carrying around that picture for 2 days and very excited about going there in the future. We totally plan to go as soon as it opens! DH has always wanted to go to Hawaii so we've saved our FF Miles and can't wait to make the trip! Now, if I can get DD6 and DS4 to understand that they may be carrying around the photo for about 2 1/2 years....

We were planning on going to Hawaii anyway in 2010 for our 10th anniversary (yes, with our kids!), but now we are going to hold off a year and spend some of the time at this resort. I think it looks like it will be very nice and fun for our kids!

My first thought is that they are not gonna fill the villas....
480 units is alot of units.....and while there will be alot of excited members....practically it's the kinda place that the majority of vacation club membership (i.e. east coast, upper midwest, and western europe) will not visit that often....maybe once every 3-5 years at most....
Compare that to the 4+ times a year that WDW DVC spots get from alot of those members.
Hawaii is along way away and it cost alot to get there....even with points in play.
Alot of us still spend 2000+ for a week at WDW not including rooms and with annual passes....
Hawaii will have a good business from the west coast....and most of the other members, such as myself, might get there a couple of times....but i don't see too much solid booking
I think one possible "benefit" is that there will be alot of trading into the Hawaii location through RCI....so that may offer up some nice exchange possibities for DVC...
And at least the new Hawaii resort will not flood WDW locations....which are already uncomfortably booked up....with new members....I would think that Japanese purchases of DVC will go up alot with this location....as will an increase in the western US
Not likely to translate into an increased demand for Florida
Does look like a beautiful development though....that is for sure.

I sort of had the same thoughts about the Hawaii location, but then I figured two additional things that hadn't occurred to me previously ...
#1, Disney is really looking to expand DVC membership to the West Coast with the GCV, so they're probably counting on a lot of Hawaii business from there.
and
#2, DVC has so many members now that 480 units really isn't a lot at all. They can probably keep them near full just on a rolling basis with the members that opt to go every five years or so.
That , plus the RCI trades you've already mentioned should be more than enough to keep the place busy.

Good points.....though i think the demand from the Eastern US is gonna be less than even DVC is anticipating....the fact that a family of four could be shelling out 3-4000 + just to fly there in the next few years....and driving isn't a feasible option...i think
Actually...i was thinking about it.....I'm gonna have 2 under 2 by the end of this year....
....I don't think I'll be saying Aloha to Hawaii until well after the Obama Administration....
...and well into Limbaugh/ Hannity '16

We're actually going to try and get out there in 2011 when it opens.
What we're hoping to pull together is to combine a trip to DL with a trip out there and then maybe a stop somewhere else (Grand Canyon maybe?) on the way back to help break things up.
But yeah, air for a family of four out there is killer. That will most likely be the only trip we take to Hawaii for at least another 5 years or so.

Hawaii looks great, and yes, we are excited to get there as a family - the DVC accomodations will make this at least somewhat easier...
What depressed me is that in the latest Disney Files, there was not one word or picture about the Treehouse Villas.
Mr. Lewis "promised" more about it when he wrote in the Winter edition...

Honestly, I'm really struggling to comprehend the reasons behind the lack of promotion of the THV's.
I haven't seen nearly the amount of concept art, floor plans, artist renderings, etc. on the THV's as I have for like AKV or BLT.

My wife and I were excited when we heard DVC was going to Hawaii ! Thats a place we always wanted to go! We figure we could always buyin when points hit the secondary market. Then bank and borrow for a big Hawaii trip every 2 years! If we don't use the points for Hawaii theres always Cali,NC, and WDW!

There's only 60 THV units to sell, whereas BLT and AKV have many more units to sell.

Mike - I figured that was the reason, but I have to agree with Ian. There's been precious little reporting by DVC in general about the THV. I mean, the THV are a pretty substantial addition to SSR - and in fact will probably be the most sought after accomodations on that particular property,
I'd like to see DVC give some hoopla to the THV! Basically it's been this: The announcement, here are some floor plans, and they'll be open in June.

I have my guesses....
The Hawaii resort does look lovely (has anyone else noticed they're going with the Hawai'i spelling?) I thought it looks sort of like a combination of the Poly and Animal Kingdom.
We're planning a trip down there too -- also saving frequent flier miles so it might make the trip doable. All three of my kids have their own miles from the last two trips we've taken, and there are ways to keep the miles from expiring, so hopefully we'll all be able to use them.
Many visits over 35+ years!
