Based on the Guidelines for the May 11, 2020 re-opening of Shanghai Disneyland; here is a list of likely changes that could be expected for the US Disney Theme Parks when they re-open:

    • Attractions, rides, shopping and dining locations operating with limited and staggered attendance.
    • Play areas and theater shows remaining closed.
    • Social distancing controls and markers in queues, restaurants, ride vehicles and other facilities throughout the park.

Size: 36.4 KB

    • Standard parades and nighttime spectaculars replaced with alternative entertainment options that allow viewing that accommodates Social Distancing.
      • Alternative examples include intermittent character processionals instead of a single daily parade and intermittent castle shows instead of a single nighttime spectacular.

    • Standard Character Meet & Greets replaced with alternative character appearances.
      • Alternative examples include making intermittent appearances in themed locations around the park that are easily viewable, but not directly accessible by Guests. (ie could appear on a balcony or other raised, separated area)

    • Frequency of sanitization measures increased in addition to the existing cleanliness procedures already in place.

    • Hand sanitizer or wash stations to be placed at all attractions, restaurant and stores.
    • All Guests could undergo temperature screening procedures upon arrival.
    • All Guests could be required to wear a CDC complaint face covering except when dining.
    • Park Tickets could be sold under the following conditions:
      • Valid for specific dates
      • Limited quantity available for each date
      • Must be purchased in advance, on-line.
      • No onsite or day of ticket sales.

    • Annual Passes could still be honored, however; reservations could be required in advance to use for a specific date and the number of reservations could be limited for each date.

No indications have been publicly given for the re-opening of the US Theme Parks at this time. US Disney theme parks have currently canceled events and reservations into July 2020.

    Thanks, Heather!

I pulled out the sections that appear to be relevant for the US parks and put together a list of what could likely be expected.

So that probably blows a hole in the suggestion that US parks might not open until 2021. Hopefully the US follows by mid-June or early July.

Yeah, looks like a long time before we, if ever, return. They are opening six flags here, but you have to have reservations to get in, and wear a mask. Way too hot for that.

The Xinhua News Agency has provided more details on Shanghai Disney's Reopening with VP of Operations Andrew Bolstein:

While there will be some differences for US parks (Health QR codes do not appear likely for the US); the overall operation should continue to set an example of how US parks will likely operate.

We enjoyed watching this yesterday, and it seems like they have carefully thought many things through. But, as I watched it, I kept thinking "this will never work in the US", since it relies on people following directions and CM's enforcing the rules.

I agree. I wouldn't want to be a cast member in the US.

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but I think there are too many Americans with a chip on their shoulder believing that it's their constitutional right to do whatever they want and they are going to go, just to make a defiant 'statement' of some kind. This mindset is already happening in the 'regular' world as places begin to open up again. I can't tell you how many people I've seen walking around already with no face covering at all.

Yep, people won't wear masks, won't follow the "one-way" signs in the grocery store, I can only imagine what they would do on vacation.

Disney would have to commit to immediately ejecting people who are not following the rules. That means giving those poor front line CMs some serious back up. They would likely have to have a lot of security present in the parks.

Agree that the overall mentality for respecting the rules will be different in China than here. It will be interesting. I fully expect there will be issues among guests, too. There will be folks who go BECAUSE masks are required, and some will ignore it - or try to. And since it'll be a requirement, the pro-mask people will not be quiet about it. It's a potentially serious health issue.

Hoping Disney can take some good lessons-learned from Shanghai and incorporate them in the US, though. I'm sure the execs are watching closely.

Even the disneystore site has new policies (some waiting room nonsense) that seems to be a pain now. Much of these things are more for show anyways, much like most visible security measures. if people want to go, knock yourself out. But the park rules, the resort modifications, etc. Does not seem like a recipe for an overly enjoyable expensive vacation.

If I can't walk through Epcot double fisting citron vodkas from France, I'm not interested

Yeah, with the whole mess that happened, with armed protesters and so on, it'd be a safer bet to wait until masks aren't mandatory anymore to reopen parks in the US... There are people defying the rules and being offended by them everywhere, but the protests are not as visible and threatening in other places.

Idk. I kind've feel like Disney management has already figuratively toppled the "Partners".
I'll meet you at the Rainbow Bridge.
