Default Where in Florida do you live?

As a sort of follow up to the 'To move or not to move thread" I was wondering for the folks who live in FL, close to FL or recently moved from Florida. Where did you live? What did you like about it? What didn't you like about it?

We are going to spend spending a lot of weekends in the next year or so hunting out different 55+ communities in FL (or possibly South Carolina.)

We are young, hubby is 55, I'm only 41 but we will be looking to move in the next 3-4 years tops. Florida gives us the chance to be closer not only to WDW but also lots of cruise ports as we cruise a lot. We are tired of the traffic here in Atlanta and will be looking for a community with a lot of activities.

I’ve been here in FL for about 10 years now. Moved from Midtown Atlanta. Grew up in McDonough/Stockbridge area.

I’m in the Hunters Creek area of Orlando. I rented a condo for about 5 years in hunters creek. Then I purchased a house here in Hunters Creek. Been here at the house about 2.5 years.

I really like it here. It’s a tight community. It’s a very active community. Lots of people walk and bike on the side walks and walking trails. There are lots of parks here. I enjoy playing tennis. There are a lot of clubs and activities that go on. And it’s a really nice looking community.

The location is perfect! It’s right off of 417 toll road. And it’s away from 1-4. Interstate 4 can be a night mare with traffic.

It’s on a main road to the airport. In fact, magical express busses pass over the exit. And of course, Disney isn’t far at all. Can get to Disney springs and Epcot in about 10-15 mins.

I like living in FL. I like the beaches. I like the inviting pools. The cold frozen drinks. I like having all the theme parks in my back yard. I like exploring all the parts of Florida. From the natural springs to cities to air boat rides. There’s lots to do. And lots for visiting guests to do.

FL seems to be a happier place. There’s always something going on and something to look toward to. Seasons come early here. Like right now Halloween season is getting ready to hit in a few weeks.

    The Downtown Orlando
Community is very strong. It’s a very tight community too. They come together and stick together and help each other out. It’s really nice to be apart of that!!!

Orlando has a farmers market every Sunday at lake Eola. It’s fun to stroll around on a Sunday.

I have no plans in moving. And there’s NO way I would move back to GA. I really enjoy it here in FL. And really like my FL house in hunters creek!!!

The bad things? It’s expensive. Everything from toll roads to HOA fees to annual passes to rent and housing prices. It’s expensive!!! A 350K house here doesn’t buy much house size wise. I mean it’s a nice house. But 350K in GA could buy a huge house. But not so much here in FL. Houses here are different than GA houses. The guest bedrooms seem to be smaller. And the closets are small. Closets in GA are as big as my guest bedrooms. It’s just smaller houses here but for bigger prices. It’s just how it is.

Also, the pay grade here is terrible!!! It’s 2 times less than most states. This is probably the biggest downfall about living in FL. I have seen many people (mostly younger people though) move here to FL, spend a year, and move back to their home state. Why? Because they figured out that they could have more of a quality life back at home. The pay grade is better else where. They don’t need a bunch of roommates. They could live alone back at home. And can afford a car payment and afford to go out on the weekends. I see this a lot with people just starting out that decide to move to FL. Gotta do your research before you move!!!!

Sometimes it can be difficult to find friends that live here. FL is a huge destination place. And seems that all the cool people I meet are here on vacation and they end up leaving. And going back home.
That can be hard for younger people I guess.

The summer here kinda stinks. Summer is the wet season. It rains a lot in the summer. It’s sticky and wet. I don’t mind June. The month of June is ok. But after the fun July 4th week, I am wanting October to get here. So 3 icky months isn’t too bad I guess.

Hurricanes aren’t fun to deal with neither. Good thing orlando is inland always. So for the most part, it’s not too bad. But. But if a cat 5 hits the coast, it could still be a cat 3 winds in Orlando. And cat 3 is pretty strong for Orlando. Just something to think about. Been here for 10 years and hurricanes haven’t been that bad. Last September when Irma hit, my yard was tossed around. It looked like a Hurricane came through. But that was about it. Nothing major happened. Hurricane season happens every year. So it’s something to get use to.

I would totally recommend looking into hunters creek area. Lake Nona is another nice area. It’s a newer community. New houses. New stores. It’s right near the airport and a little further ways from Disney than hunters creek. But it’s an area to consider as well.

Winter park is a popular area that people like to move to. It’s more out closer to Orlando and away from the parks. Winter park has a nice farmers market on Saturdays. I enjoy going to that. And I have noticed that a lot of people that live in winter park drive around in golf carts. That would be cool. To live in a golf cart community.

Mount Dora is a nice area too. But it’s far away from everything. It’s not close to the parks at all. It’s more of a nice place to visit as a FL local. It has a mountain feel to it so all the locals go there for the day to “get away” from the flatlands.

So yeah, hunters creek, lake Nona, winter park, and mount Dora are great areas to look into if you are looking the in Orlando area.

I know a little about the treasure coast on the Atlantic around Vero Beach as well. Sebastian FL is a nice place to live near the coast. It’s about an hour and a half away from Orlando.

Further south, there’s a place called Stuart FL. There’s something special about that place. Even their bridges are different. It’s really nice there. But it’s kinda far south down in FL.

Lastly, here are some things to consider when looking for a FL house: Remember I told you FL house are smaller, right?
Even the garages are smaller. If you look around, people in FL drive small cars. And small suvs. Because garages here are smaller too. The big SUVs and trucks that people drive in GA don’t fit well in FL garages. So I would look into 3 car garage. So you can park 2 cars into it and have extra storage space. Most people that have a 2 car garage use it as storage. They don’t park their cars in it. I have a 3 car garage. And I would recommend it!!! I can park 2 cars in it and have extra storage space for Christmas decorations and sorts. It just gives that little extra storage space that everyone needs.

I wasn’t necessarily looking for a pool with the house. In fact, I was kinda trying to find a house without a pool. But to find a 3 car garage house in FL without a pool is kinda hard. But I am so glad I did get a house with a pool. It really wouldn’t be FL if there wasn’t a screened cage and pool in the back yard!!! It really makes it FL!!!!
So yeah, I would recommend a pool for sure.

Hope that helps. Looking at houses is really fun and exciting!!! So have fun looking and exploring!! Very exciting stuff!!

My husband and I lived in the Melbourne, FL, area (Suntree, to be exact) for 12 years before moving Texas. It was a nice area--near the beaches, about 45 minutes from WDW, and right alongside I-95, which made going up and down the coast easy (and with less traffic than Orlando). With Cape Canaveral and NASA right down the road, I couldn't guess how many shuttle and rocket launches we saw from our front door! Housing prices were not high in Florida the majority of the time we lived there; in fact, they skyrocketed just in time for us to sell our house for a profit when we moved to Texas. I kind felt bad for the people who bought our house because prices eventually went down again and there is probably no way they will ever get their total investment out of it when they sell.

People always ask why we moved. The primary reason was that my husband got a promotion with his company (the oil industry, of course--that's why we're here in Texas!) But truth be told, we were ready for a change. Aside from the 12 years we lived there after we were married, we also lived there for quite a few years before we started dating too (it's where we met). So we were kind of tired of stucco Mediterranean-style houses all on top of each other, palm trees and the flat open swamp land. Not tired of the beach, though--still a favorite thing, but at least we don't live too far from it here in Houston either!

Thanks for all the info, we have noticed the smaller sized houses (but we live in a small house now with only a 1 car garage) so it would be ok with us. We'd probably actually up upgrading size wise as our small 2 bedroom house on the lake is worth more than the ones we are looking at (thank goodness.) All good points so far. We plan on coming down and checking out different communities every couple of months.

I'm in Davenport, I'm the four corners area. Basically near Clermont/ Cagen Crossings (192 & 27). I'm about 15/20 minutes from the parks. Taking the back road, I avoid the traffic on 192. Lots of shopping and restaurants. Being older, I also look for good medical care. I use the Florida hospital medical group and Florida Hospital Celebration Health. I really like this area as it's convenient to everything. When I first moved to Florida ( 5 years ago), we were in Winter Haven. It's about halfway to Lakeland. Loved the area, but it was too far from the I4, and Disney.
