Default Interview for a lead position at work

I am so nervous yet excited at the same time. I have been in my position for 9 years now. Out of the level 2 analysts I am the one who has the most experience. Since our most recent lead took a trainer position for a new department, I have been filling the role waiting for them to post the position. They finally posted it. I applied and within the hour they sent the email for my phone interview.

My work HR dept has a whole Talent acquisition department (we are a very large hospital integrated delivery network) so no one is ever really promoted on merit, any position that opens up has to be posted and you have to apply for it.

I am cautious because we have done some reorganizing lately so my current supervisor, who will still be my supervisor in the new role, will be doing the interview and I only was just moved under her a couple months ago.

So 1, I am a little nervous about the phone interview with HR and 2 a little nervous about the full regular interview. My supervisor is great, I love her but since I haven't worked with her for very long we still haven't really connected as a team.

I am not very good in an interview setting. I get nervous and can't speak. working as a trainer and leader, I get questions all day and have no problem. I think maybe it's an authority thing? I don't know. I know my job inside and out, I know the guidelines and the systems better than anyone, but being able to convey that I do in an interview i stumble over words.

    Any tips?

I was just promoted to a director at my job so I just went through this. The first phone interview with hr was very easy because they just verified my experience and got a feel for what type of leader i would be. The hard interviews were above my executive director. The regional and east coast leader had very pointed questions. It sounds like you will do what I did and turn your daily routines into a plan for growth and prosperity. You do know the job and the excitment they hear from you regarding impoved service or a fresh approach will be the glue to keep it all togather.
    Good luck!

Thanks! I got through the phone interview. I felt really good about my answers until she asked them. Now I feel like an idiot. For some reason I had a hard time finishing my sentences, like I kept forgetting where I was going with what I was saying. But I already have the full interview scheduled so it couldn't have been that bad. It is scheduled for Wednesday at 1:00 with my supervisor, the other team lead and the department director. I feel less nervous about this one.

    Keep the positive thoughts coming!

Lizzy, telephone interviews tend to be awkward, partially because you can't see the interviewers body language and there are no visual cues to let you know how your answers are being received - positively or negatively. I find face-to-face interviews to be much more relaxed. Good luck Wednesday. You got this !!

Good luck !! .. just remember to breathe and pause to answer .. .don't think you need to jump right in. To pause a second or two gives you the change to breathe, then formulate your answer ... it's never easy, but if you know you job well, let your experience speak !!
