Road trip from Michigan to the Grand Canyon
So, this was supposed to be this year's vacation. But with all the upheaval, thinking we weren't going to go anywhere, then finding out we could - we ended up going to WDW with shorter than usual notice. I'm so grateful we were able to go! We had a blast as usual!
But, now I'm working on planning this trip for next year. I'm using Roadtrippers to figure out what would be fun to stop and see along the way and while we're out there. Has anyone done a similar route? What would you say are the must dos? Thanks!

Love roadtrips and Roadtrippers is nice. Tripit is good and so is tripline, especially for documenting your trip afterwards.
I got nothing for you until the Tulsa area. Try to take a bit of Route 66 between Claremore, OK and Tulsa, OK. There is a Blue Whale roadside attraction around Catoosa that is just classic America. Tulsa has some nice casinos and seriously the best pizza in the world. The Hideaway pizza is the best I've ever had. Crazy it's a small OK chain centered around Tulsa.
NM is nice but a bit boring. Petrified Forest just inside Arizona is awesome. Probably see pronghorn and they have an Old Faithful there that is very cool.
From Flagstaff, I love driving up through Sunset Crater and Wupatki up to the Grand Canyon.
Enjoy and safe travels!

Thank you for the tips! I'll check out those other travel sites and look into those attractions. I love those classic roadside attractions!

I don't have recommendations for the actual road trip from Michigan. Just wanted to make sure that you've booked your Grand Canyon accommodations. They fill up fast (like a year in advance!) We stayed on the North Rim, which is quieter, cooler and less touristy than the South Rim. But wherever you stay, the views are breathtaking!
If you get the chance, make a side trip to Zion or Bryce National Parks. Beautiful scenery and amazing hikes.

Nothing booked at the Grand Canyon yet! We aren't sure if we are going to stay right there, or stay somewhere more central for day trips not only to the canyon but other things nearby. Not even sure if that's feasible! We're in the very beginning of the planning stages, not even quite sure when we'll be going. DH probably won't be able to officially request the time off until later this year. I may try booking something by the Grand Canyon just in case. Anyone have a favorite lodge?
And thanks for the additional tips! The petrified forest sounds cool!

At this point the summer is probably booked for all Canyon resorts.....Booking for the next season starts the prior May and trust me, people are on the phone the minute the phone lines open. After staying at the El Tovar on the South Rim I can't imagine staying anywhere else. It is right on the rim and huge Elk roam the grounds. The hotel looks old fashion but everything is fairly new. If you want to stay in the park starting calling now...and call everyday....you might get lucky and snag a cancellation. If you do go ahead and book it....you can cancel fairly close to your booking time if you find you aren't going to need the room.

Okay, thanks! I remember finding out the same about Yellowstone and booking that over a year out. The trouble is, I can't seem to nail down what time we're going. I should probably see what, if anything is still available and think about planning the trip around those dates.
