Default The Voice of the Dodgers

Listening to Sports Center on ESPN this AM, and heard again the voice I have heard most of my life...Vince Scully, announcing the newest Dodger's first Dodger Home Run...Since I used to listen to Dodger games, while they were still in Brooklyn, my ears perk up when I hear that voice. Amazing that even at 84 +, his enthusiasm for the game remains.
I was never a Mel Barber fan, and was glad when he left the Dodgers for the hated Yankees. Then I could boo his calls! But he did recognized Scully's talents, and, as I recall the story, fought hard for Vince to join him with the Dodgers, and then to replace him. Used to use that example on several professional occasions, when I was asked to help recruit my own replacement.

There really are only a handful of broadcasters that can call a game and bring you back to your youth. I've had this discussion recently with other guys about who their favorite baseball broadcaster is. Vin Scully is at the top of the list with no arguments. However, there are voices of distinction for each market. But with the playoffs looming I find myself drawn to a game where Jon Miller (ESPN) is calling.

Other greats whose voices are/were indistinguishable are Harry Kalas, Jack Buck, Mel Allen, Ernie Harwell, and even Harry Caray.

It seems that all the new guys coming in have the ESPN highlight mentality and try to make it a circus.
