Talking Do you pick a TS for its atmosphere and not the food...

On my upcoming trip in November, it will be my DH's first time and I wanted him to help make the decisions on where we placed our ADRs on the trip.

In DHS, we chose Sci-Fi over getting a Fantasmic dinner package or other TS there. While I've gone there twice, I love the atmosphere, but the food to me is just meh.

We picked a lot of the ADRs this year that will be new to me, but i'm excited about where will be going. I'm a super picky eater and my stomach gets rumbly easily, so I went with looking at TS places that had a neat or different atmostphere rather than the food itself.

    BTW, our ADRs:
-LTT (DH is a mac&cheese lover)
    -Sci-Fi
    -Rose&Crown
    -Narcoossees
    -Sanaa
    -Garden Grill

Does anyone else do this? If so, which places do you choose for the environment/atmosphere?

Good food absolutely comes first for any dining choice for us. When we have first time WDW visitors with us there are someplaces we put on the list because of the uniqueness/atmosphere/experience as long as the food is not awful. Fortunately most WDW food is good to exceptional.

We do both. Our family loves the atmospehre at Sci Fi and we never miss eating here. We usually keep to the simple burgers, pasta, sandwich etc.. Most other places we eat we enjoy the food. We do like to try something new each trip. Last time it was T-REX. This time we are going to try LaCellier for lunch. The rest of the ADR's we have we not only love the food but also the atmosphere.

We mainly go for the food with the exception of Sci-Fi where we just get onion rings & milkshakes & enjoy the atmosphere.

    For atmosphere, I love:

    San Angel Inn/Cava del Tequila

    Sci-Fi

Chefs de France (not as obvious but works for me)

The pub side of Rose and Crown, just stopping for a drink and snack, no ADR

Grand Floridian Cafe, breakfast, lunch, or the tea spot (reminds me of a tea room my grandmother used to take me to)

    Sanaa

    'Ohana

    California Grill (the views)

Atmosphere is a must for us. We travel with children Plus I love to experience something cool. If we don't like the food we just pick something else next time (with atmosphere). Places we have ate at once or several times are:
    whispering canyon cafe
    ohana character breakfast
    boma
    1900 park fare
    chef mickeys
    hollywood and dine character breakfast
    teppan edo
    coral reef
    rainforest cafe

Honestly, atmosphere is probably the main consideration for us. We can find good restaurant food at home, but that isn't the main reason for going to Disney. We're doing Sci Fi and San Angel because one daughter really wants to do those (I question the food at both - I don't really like Mexican, especially); we're going to Tusker House and Coral Reef because the other daugther wants to do those; I'm doing Cape May because I want to see the characters in their beach wear, etc. ;-)

    Kind of?

Whispering Canyon, Chef Mickey's, Crystal Palace, and 50's Prime Time are all places I've booked mainly for the atmosphere. That being said, I've never had a problem with the food at any of them. I have seen a few of these places get poor reviews for their food, but I do not agree. Admittedly, I'm not the pickiest person, but I almost always find something that I enjoy at all of these places.

Great responses you guys! San Angel definitely has a cool atmosphere. Might have to put that on the to-do list. Same for Chef Mickeys. I remember through it as a child thinking how cool that breakfast looked. I considered it for a dinner but we opted for LTT instead.

    Keep the responses coming!

Our last trip my husband and I ate at San Angel - this was our new restaurant to try that trip. Our two adult kids ate at Via Napoli while we ate there. I have read that a lot of people don't care for the food but we enjoyed what we got and the atmosphere was great. Had always wanted to eat here since we eat at Blue Bayou @ Disneyland and it's similar in atmosphere but different food...and I love Mexican. Like I posted before we always like to try something new each trip.

I don't choose restaurants based entirely on atmosphere. (If I did, I'd have all my meals at Sci-Fi Dine-In )

That said, there are places where exceptional decor outshines the food -- Coral Reef and San Angel Inn come to mind. I enjoy both of those restaurants on their own merits, but the setting makes the experience special.

Forgot about Coral Reef for atmosphere, Jared. Good choice. And I agree that it's never all about atmosphere for us, but it is a nice plus. Good service will keep me coming back over good atmosphere. In a perfect world, a restaurant has great food, atmosphere, and service.

Another one I forgot for atmosphere, Yak and Yeti. Lots of authentic Tibetan touches make it interesting, like an extension of the Everest queue.

    Yes and no.

Like we will try new places for the atmosphere, even if we've heard the food is average.

But once I've been there ad don't like the food, nope.

I will go because of the atmosphere. I will stay away because the food is bad.

We usually go for the better food first and we usually pick based on what the adults like.

We actually like the food at San Angel. The atmosphere is a plus.

Our other favorites are Sanaa and Boma.

Atmosphere means a lot to me, however I have one place in mind that has so much atmosphere, so incredibly cool, yet the food absolutely STINKS !!! San Angel Inn !! I love walking through there, and riding the ride, but the food....well, I'd rather eat from a dumpster.....yes, bad experience.....anyway, to answer your question...food quality is paramount, yet food and atmosphere go hand in hand to make the dinner either just good, or unforgettable !!!!

Anyplace outside of WDW, I'd be all about the food, but in WDW, atmosphere wins out. If it's weird, or silly, or fun, or enertaining, or just awesomely themed, we're in. That said, it probably doesn't hurt that I'm pretty easy to please, food-wise - I'm not picky, and as long as my food isn't completely inedible, I'm happy (at least when I am in WDW).

We go mainly for the "experience" not the food. We always go to Sci-Fi, Ohana, Teppan Edo, Whispering Canyon, and Character Breaksfasts at MK (Crystal PAlace) and AK.
