    Default Driving through Atlanta

So we are 80.5 days away from being at WDW. We have decided to drive this year and I have question for those that have to make the trip to Florida through Atlanta. Is it faster to stay on I-75 through the middle of the city or should we take the I-285 that skirts around the western side of the area? We most likely will be hitting Atlanta around 4-5pm on a Saturday.

    Thanks all!!

    We always go right through.
I have never been that time of day though as I always time it to be very early in the morning or late at night.

That time of day on a Saturday you will be fine as long as there are no special events of any kind in the area that may cause traffic congestion. Right now I'm not aware of anything going on around that time.

If you do decide to take the 285 western bypass, pay very close attention to the signage for the exit and ramps from 285 back onto 75. Its easy to miss the exit from 285 and then the ramp splits and it is easy to accidentally take the wrong one.

My wife and I always drive straight through Atlanta, staying on I75. We get in the HOV lane as soon as it is available and stay there. That way we know we are in the right lane and don't have to worry about missing an exit, there aren't any. I was always worried about getting stuck in an exit only lane and not being able to get over because of traffic, but the HOV lane makes it much easier.

Another vote here to stay on I-75 through ATL. Unless there is some bumper to bumper accident, STAY ON 75.

I also agree to use the HOV if you get "shaky" when driving in a 6 lane highway and having to merge across that many lanes fairly quickly to stay on 75 South.

I agree too! Stay on I75, and enjoy the HOV lines.

We had horrible timing once, and ended up smack in rush hour. As soon as we got into the HOV lane, we flew through the rest of town.

Default Should be fine thru town

I live in Atlanta and you should be fine at that hour on the weekend. You can also grab a chili dog, onion rings and a frosted orange at The Varsity off of North Avenue by GA Tech to tide you over to Orlando.

Check traffic by calling 511 for construction and accident info. 285 on the west side (going south from 75) drops straight down, so you're not going out of your way if you elect to take that route. Good Luck!

    DO IT! Love The Varsity!

I agree with everyone saying to just stay on 75. We never have issues getting through Atlanta, and it's fun to drive right through the middle of the city.

Another Georgian saying stay on 75 and hit the Varsity. Everyone should try it once. Just be prepared for the grease. Onion rings!!!

Do take I-475 to by-pass Macon, though.

Yes, definitely take the I-475 to bypass Macon. And if it's not during rush hour, avoid the bypass and head straight through Atlanta on the I-75.

    Default agree I-75

both have equal chances of traffic so you might as well head right into the "belly of the beast".
    the reward would be greater.
    the Varsity is AWESOME!
if you wanna try to push it you could stop at Nu-Way weiners in Macon?
