Today in Disney History 3/11
Mar. 11, 1889 – The California legislature divided Los Angeles and created Orange County (the future home of Disneyland) as a separate political entity. It is named for its most famous product…the orange.
Mar. 11, 1909 – Jules Engel, filmmaker, animator, painter, sculptor, and teacher, was born in Budapest, Hungry. His family would migrate to America and he will grow up in Illinois. In 1938, Engel would be hired by Walt Disney Studios to work on Disney’s “Fantasia” and later “Bambi.” Starting in 1944, he would be a founding member of the innovative studio United Productions of America. Along with Robert Cannon, Engel would create Mr. Magoo, Gerlad McBoing Boing, and Madeline.
Mar. 11, 1933 – Disney’s Silly Symphony carton “Birds in the Spring” was released.
Mar. 11, 1938 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Donald’s Better Self” was released.
Mar. 11, 1943 – Wayne Allwine, the third voice of Mickey Mouse (not including park attractions, etc. since Mickey’s Christmas Carol in 1983), was born. (The only other 2 to voice the famous Mouse were Walt Disney and James Macdonald.
Mar. 11, 1950 – Bruce Healey, composer/arranger/conductor and music director for Walt Disney attractions, was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His Disney work includes “Fantasmic!,” “One Man’s Dream,” and Disney’s “Fantillusion” (at Tokyo Disneyland.) Healey also produced such Disney CD’s as the 1997 Official Album of Disneyland/Walt Disney World and the 1996 Mickey’s Sports Songs.
Mar. 11, 1955 – Disney’s special cartoon “Contrasts in Rhythm” was released.
Mar. 11, 1956 – Voice actor Rob Paulsen was born in Detroit, Michigan. Best known for his extensive roles as the voices of animated characters, his Disney credits include “Kingdom Hearts II,” “Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas,” “Mulan II,” “Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers,” “Teacher’s Pet,” “Stitch! The Movie,” and “Cinderella II: Dreams Come True.”
Mar. 11, 1959 – The “Golden Oak Ranch” located in Placerita Canton, 25 miles north of the Disney Studios in Burbank, Ca. was purchased by the Disney Co. It would later be used as the set location for the serial “Spin and Marty,” and for some of the segments for such films as “Toby Tyler,” “Follow Me, Boys!,” “The Parent Trap,” “The Apple Dumpling Gang,” and “The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit.”
