"Best" is so subjective. Also, as others have stated, it depends on your location for most rivalries. The exception is Army vs. Navy. I also like Army vs. Navy because while it is heated, there isn't any real nastiness behind it as seems to run through some of the regional rivalries.

Let me use Florida vs. Florida State as an example. All of my cousins went to either Florida or Florida State (my sister and I (and our mother) are the exception for the women in the family who are college educated) and some of them hold it against the other side and think less of them due to where they went to school, which to me is absolutely ridiculous .

Of course, a favorite slogan of mine is "I root for 2 teams, Boston College and anyone playing Notre Dame". For those who do not know, BC and Notre Dame are the only Catholic colleges/universities which have Div. 1-A football programs.

Most of the rivalries ebb and flow based on the competitiveness of the two teams. This is particularly true of the pro teams. Once, the Rams and 49's were a real "us vs them"....Now, no one cares. The same is usually true of the Dodgers and Giants...and the Cowboys-Redskins rivalry has been luke warm at best for years.....but the Yankees and Redsox rivalry even survived the years when neither was competitive.

As for high school rivalries, down here, they talk about Byrnes-Dorman as if it really matters. But the Easton-P'burg game....As I recall, Easton and P'burg each rank 1st or 2nd in their respective states in total wins...The game is always played on Thanksgiving....Way back, while in High School, a classmate's dad was able to get some of us tickets to Lafayette College field, where the game has long been played....Don't remember the year, but two long time coaches in the rivalry once both retired at the end of the game.
So from South Carolina (by way of Saylorsburg, PA, ect) another vote for the Red Rovers vs the Stateliners.

I wouldn't call Ali/Foreman a rivalry, they only fought once.

    How about Hagler/Leonard?

Hmmmmm. I'm going to have to take this thread international:

    Biggest is easy:

    Game: Cricket.
    Matchup: India V Pakistan

A nation of over a billion people and a nation of 170 million. They share a (oft contested) border and are separated to varying lengths by culture and religion. They also happen to both be obsessed with the same sport. There's not much of a competition.

    Most Heated:

This would have to be one of two soccer derbies: The Old Firm, Rangers Vs Celtic and the Superclasico, Boca Juniors Vs River Plate. The two rivalries have a meaning far greater than the game (religion and national identity of the former case, class identification and politics in the latter) and are red hot. I would never consider either of them the "Best" however because from the outside they are more unpleasant than their status is worth and TBH both leave an unpleasant taste in my mouth.

Best? I don't know. As a cricket lover I find that the romanticism and heritage of the Ashes (England vs Australia) is as unique as you get. If you are a sports lover of any kind and don't know the story of the urn and what it represents look it up - it's worth it.

Oh, and because you folks are probably too polite to say it I will. Anything involving the US, Russia and the Olympics is must-watch stuff.
    I've got a dirty thumb.

I believe it is still the only High School football game shown live on national TV.
There is a high school football rivalry in Louisville, Kentucky that has been going on since the late 1800s. It is also shown on one of the ESPN channels every year and betting on it shows up on the boards in Vegas. It is the annual St. X-Trinity football game. A great rivalry. Played at the University of Louisville's stadium because no high school football stadiums can hold all the people who attend it every year.

However, I'd go with Liverpool-Manchester United from the English Premier League in Britain. Not only is it a rivalry between regions, but it also has to do with socio-economic status as well. Fights break out all the time between supporters. And, this is the only rivalry match/game where I've seen a supporter escorted out with a dart embedded in his cheek because the opposing club's supporters were throwing them at the them. YIKES! No love lost between these 2!

It's a totally regional thing and I have to go with...

    FL-Georgia

    or

    FL-FSU

Having been a Gator my entire life, I can't choose between these two rivalries.

BUT, I would venture to say the FL-Georgia conflict is so emotional neither team has it on home turf-it's always in Jacksonville.

Have to agree with you there.

Can I also add the Oxford v Cambridge University boat race which has been contested since 1829.

    Here's the deal,

So the question is greatest rivalry. As I have stated more than once I know there is regional bias, but it does not mean that we cannot debate the question. It does mean you have to look at it with national perspective. The question was not "greatest rivalry in your area of the country". That's really not a great question because we all know what rivalries dominate certain parts of the country.

For example I would say without a doubt that Duke vs Carolina is the greatest college basketball rivalry. I do not live on the coast. I have grown up in the middle of SEC country and I can see that the basketball rivalries here even Louisville vs Kentucky which is great, do not measure up to Duke vs. Carolina.

    Great College Fottball Rivalries:
Michigan vs Ohio State, Florida vs Fla State, Oregon State vs Oregon, Nebraska vs Oklahoma, USC vs Notre Dame, Texas vs Texas A & M, Miami vs FSU, UCLA vs USC, Stanford vs Cal, Florida vs Georgia, Tennessee vs Alabama, Georgia vs Georgia Tech, and of course Army vs Navy.

All of these are great and dominate someone's corner of the world. I am sure I omited some, however with the exception of Army vs Navy, it makes a big difference as to how well the teams are playing in the intensity of the rivalry. So my answer to the question is, Auburn vs Alabama. I have lived in different states, but have never seen the passion and hatred that these two fan bases have for each other. Granted I grew up in the south but I never liked either team. In fact it irritates me to even acknowledge that this is a great rivalry at all. Auburn could be 0-11 for 8 consecutive years, and Alabama could be 1-10 during that same stretch year after year, but the earth would still stand still on game day. Other rivalries fade when the teams are bad, not this one.

Interesting thought within that post....do Americans really consider Russia rivals any longer during Olympic competition? I don't think so. I would say Americans would prefer to see our atheletes defeat China, France, and Cuba.

There is a good discussion located within this thread, but not for this section of the site.

As for England.... Scotland not Ireland?

I must say I have a problem with all these duplicates. How can Alabama/Auburn be "the best" when some might consider Alabama/Tennesse to be equal or better? With Army/Navy and Michigan/Ohio State, there is no other choice.

Are you telling me Michagan vs Michagan State is not a rivalry? Most teams have multiple rivals, at least the good one do I can tell you very, very few Tennessee fans would argue that Tennessee vs Alabama comes close to Auburn vs Alabama. I take it Ohio State has no qualms with anyone else in the Big 10?

It's definitely a rivalry, but only one can be "The Best". What I'm saying is that if some Alabama fans think that the rivalry with Tenn is "The Best" (and I'm not saying that, just commenting because you threw it out there) then I think that takes away from their rivalry with Auburn being "The Best". If you ask any Michigan or OS fan which is "The Best", you'll get one unanimous answer.

Live in Ohio or Michigan. I can assure you, the hatred these two teams and the fans of such teams is just as deep or deeper than Alabama/Auburn. OSU can be 11-0 and Michigan can be 0-11 (would be a dream come true for me ) and I still want my Buckeyes to absolutely crush them each and every time. On the flip side, if Michigan would have beat Ohio State last year, and gone 4-8 instead of 3-9, their season would have been a success and RichRod would have been hailed as a hero.

See, it still boils down to which area of the country you live in as to which is the "best". Like Scar said ask any one of our fans and it's unanimous, OSU vs that team from up north (many people still won't say the school's name).

It's entirely too subjective to say which is the absolute best and get any kind of agreement.
