Default Shame On You Univ. Of Tennessee

    I just have to rant,

I am so completely disgusted in how UT has treated Phillip Fulmer today. Throwing him under the bus before the end of the season is just stomach churning for me. What Phil has done for UT stands far above the hard times he is having the last few years. I was undecided on whether he should be shown the door at the end of the year, but doing it now seems completely tactless on the part of the AD and others in charge. I have this gut feeling that this embarrassing decision will bring upon Tennessee a new "curse of the bambino".

I watched the press conference live today and just cried like a baby (just like Phil)

As an Alabama grad, I can say we have been through it as well. It is the nature of things, win or else. Regardless of your past ties to a university, it boils down to wins, tails in the seats and the dollars both bring in. As a high school coach, I can say that even reaches our level as well. Good luck, except for the third Saturday in October

It should not of been a surprise. Win or else in the SEC. Tubberville at Aurburn and Crooms at Mississippi State will probably be next.

While I don't completely agree with how it was handled, I felt like it was coming. The last few seasons have not been our best; the current season has been dismal.

My guess is they decided to announce it early since there are other schools looking (or possibly looking) for a Head Coach for the 2009-2010 season, such as Washington. Better to have the vacancy announced early and hope they can get their pick, rather than waiting around and watching that person go to another university.

To that point, isn't there a rumor going around that Tuberville (Auburn) is on his way out as well? I would think that the SEC would be a big draw for coaches and Tennessee and Auburn both have great programs and traditions.

I've seen some speculation that Will Muschamp is a top choice for UTK. I would think that if they want him, they'd better get to him before the possible ousting of Tuberville, given his ties to Auburn.

Either way, I just hope that Tennessee gets to turn it around next year.

The Head Coach at Tennessee (Phil Fulmer) was "asked" to resign. The press conference was held today and was pretty brutal. I think part of what some of us are so upset about is the depth of his connections to the university. He played there and was on the coaching staff prior to his appointment as Head Coach.

The local stations have the conference in its entirety on their websites.

Phil Fulmer should have seen it coming, he took over when they dumped Johnny Majors. It is sad but change is a necessary part of life.

He has plenty of people that will remember him fondly. He won't suffer for lack of money. Six million dollars over 48 months for buying out his contract.

It had to happen eventually. One national championship doesn't bring lifetime job security. There seems to be only two coaches immune to getting fired: Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden.

I'd prefer that UT hire from outside, preferably a current NFL head coach or assistant coach, but I bet John Chavis gets promoted instead. Which will be more of the same.

Umm...College Football has nothing to do with "college". It is 100% business. What would happen to any of us if we performed at 33% of expectations? We would all get fired. Fulmer was getting paid a large amount of money to win. I would quit my job in a heartbeat to coach for their salaries for one year.

As a former college athlete, i find it difficult when a coach is treated like that- He recruits these players and they come there for him/her...
Also he told their parents he'd take care of them. etc.... its really sad.

Very Bush league on the part of the Tennessee administration.

That is a really good point that I had never considered. Thanks for sharing!

I agree with this. Maybe they could have handled it better, but I can't feel sorry for Phillip Fulmer. The huge amount of money he is getting paid to leave his job is astounding. I might be a little upset at first if I were in his position, but I would probably get over it very soon.

To the topic starter, I never imagined I would see someone on Intercot from Whitwell, TN. I grew up about 30 minutes from there (Tracy City).

Well, well, well. I wonder how hard it was for Phillip Fulmer to wipe that big, fat grin off of his face this morning?

(For those that don't get this post, Phil's replacement (Lane Kiffin) left UT very abruptly last night, after only 14 months in a job that in the past 31 years has had only two other occupants before him. It was such a shock to the UT campus that near-riots broke out as students gathered and shouted things at Kiffin which Intercot's TOS do not allow me to repeat.)

While I don't live for UT football as much as I used to (fair weather fan) I am so shocked and disappointed in this news.

Hey, I was just hoping Monte Kiffin would come back to the Bucs and bring back those great defenses, but he followed his son to USC .

From what I have seen out of Lane, losing Monte may actually be the bigger blow for UT.
