Aug. 17, 1786 – American folk-hero, congressman and explorer Davy Crockett was born in Greene County, Tn. (In 1954 Crockett would become widely popular through Disney movies, television programs and even a hit song.)
Aug. 17, 1882 – Actor Charles Judels, the voice of Stromboli in Disney’s classic 1940 release, “Pinocchio,” was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Aug. 17, 1920 – Actress/singer Maureen O’Hara was born in Ireland. Fans of Disney’s 1961 “The Parent Trap” will know her as Margaret “Maggie” McKendrick.
Aug. 17, 1925 – Disney’s Alice Comedy Film “Alice Chops the Suey” previewed at Bard’s Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles, Ca.
Aug. 17, 1936 – Veteran Disney animator Les Clark spoke at a studio training course for new animators. Since the departure of Ub Iwerks, Clark has animated Mickey Mouse in numerous films, thus becoming a specialist on the characters personality and movement.
Aug. 17, 1941 – Walt Disney leaves on a goodwill tour of Latin America accompanied by Mary Blair and other animators and designers.
Aug. 17, 1954 – The Disney film “Willie the Operatic Whale” was released.
Aug. 17, 1958 – Singer Belinda Carlisle, best known as the lead singer of the all-female band The Go-Go’s, was born in Hollywood, Ca. She recorded two versions of “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love),” from Disney’s “Hercules,” for promotional purposes.
Aug. 17, 1981 – Disney constructed a WEDway PeopleMover at the Houston Intercontinental Airport. It was the only transportation system that actually sold by Disney’s Community Transportation Services division. The technology of the PeopleMover and monorails were later sold to Canadian Co. Bombardier, Inc.
Aug. 17, 1984 – The Walt Disney Co. informed it’s chairman Ron Miller that they wanted his resignation. Disney has fallen to 14th in film box office. Miller’s only qualifications to run a conglomerate other than being Walt’s son-in-law was that he was a tight-end for the L.A. Rams.

Hooray for "uncle davy" (a very distant relative). By the way if you ever visit the resort town of Gatlinburg Tennessee, the mountain directly over looking the town (which the Sky Lift goes up) is Crockett Mountain.
