Aug. 15, 1843 – Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park in Copenhagen, Denmark, opened. It included a variety of attractions such as mechanical amusement rides, a theatre, restaurants, and flower gardens. On certain evenings, specially designed fireworks would fill the sky over Tivoli Lake. (One of the oldest amusement parks in the world, Tivoli Gardens would greatly inspire and influence Walt Disney.)
Aug. 15, 1901 – Songwriter and Disney Legend Ned Washington was born in Scranton, Pa. He would go on to write the lyrics for the popular Disney tune “When You Wish Upon A Star.”
Aug. 15, 1917 – Chuck Boyajian (who in 1955 would become Disneyland’s first manager of Custodial Operations) was born in Ohio.
Aug. 15, 1929 – Disney’s Mickey Mouse short “Wild Waves” was released.
Aug. 15, 1935 – Actor Jim Dale, whose Disney Credits include the 1978 “Hot Lead and Cold Feet” and the 1977 “Pete’s Dragon,” was born in England. (Dale narrates the Harry Potter audio books)
Aug. 15, 1936 – Disney animator Ward Kimball married Betty Lawyer (who has been working in Disney’s Ink and Paint Department for a year.)
Aug. 15, 1946 – Disney’s animated “Make Mine Music,” 10 shorts combined into a compilation, was generally released. Narrated by Nelson Eddy, the film features the voices and sounds of vocalist Dinah Shore, band-leader clarinest Benny Goodman, Sterling Holloway, and singing trio The Andrew Sisters.
Aug. 15, 1955 – LIFE magazine ran an article on Disneyland’s grand opening day which happened 3 weeks earlier.
Aug. 15, 1958 – Actor Rondell Sheridan, Victor Baxter on Disney Channel’s “That’s So Raven,” was born in Chicago, Il.
Aug. 15, 1989 – Joseph Adam “Joe” Jonas, a member of the Jonas Brothers, was born in Casa Grande, Az. The “middle Jonas,” he would actually start out wanting to be a comedian, not a singer.
