    Post Michael Phelps!

Michael Phelps is the most amazing swimmer of all time. He has beaten Mark Spits' record, and is trying for more. He has gotten 3 gold medals so far, and wants five more. As a fan, I think he will get them all. Go Michael!

He is amazing, truly. I enjoy watching him swim tremendously. He has such a passion for the sport, it's infectious. Did you see the article that Mark Spitz is mad they didn't invite him to come?

I think it's a slap to Spitz not to have him at the Swimming event, he is truly an American hero. I remember I had a swim mask with his name on it when I was a kid. I think Phelps has grown up since his last Olympics, learned from some of his mistakes (DUI) and seems pretty humble.

This guy is amazing! I wasn't sure when they said he was going for 8 if he was going to accomplish it. Then they had a couple near misses but kept coming out on top! It was awesome to be able to watch him make history twice! First with earning the most gold medals in olympic history then once again making history by earning the most golds in a single olympics ever!

But you also have to give congrats to his team mates which it would have been difficult to accomplish the 8 Golds with out in the relays. Especially Lezak who came from behind to beat france in the last few meters of the 4 x 100 m freestyle it was really amazing!

This guy is great!! I was watching this commercial thing about him and it said that when he was younger, his sister tried out for the olympics but didn't make it. it said that inspired him to try swimming, even though at the time, he was afraid to put his face under the water!!

What a fantastic run (or swim) he had this Olympics!! I love his family, his mom and coach have done a great job with him. Did you all hear the guy that almost beat him (the one that didn't touch the wall before Phelps by a sliver) said it would be good for him to not win!! Haha! I hope he makes a lot of $$. I loved his facial expressions after he won and he was truly thankful to his teammates for helping him win the relay gold both times.

I was wondering how many of the other sports in the Olympics can an athlete have a chance to win 8 metals? Is there any? The only one I can think of is track and field.

Gymnastics you can theoretically go for 6 gold medals is you are female, 8 if you are male. In the past some individuals have come near this, though realistically competitors these days are only likely to win perhaps 4 since there are more specialists.

In a full cycling programme a couple of the British competitors could have been going for 4-6 golds, but there are only a limited number of events and they'll only try for 3 each.

Theoretically Track and Field Athletes COULD go for as many as they want, but anything more than three (eg. 100m, 200m, 100 relay; heptathlon, 400m, 400 relay) would be extraudinary. Carl Lewis managed four but it now looks like it was done with assistance.

In the decathlon, they get points for each event and then only one gold medal, which is kind of weird, running and all the jumping and such is much harder on the body than swimming (since a lot of runners use swimming for therapy). When I did track and field, you are usually good at short or long distance, but it's rare to be great at both. I hope it doesn't come out later that a lot of the swimmers have had assistance, there has been some talk about that.

    - I'm wondering if the Chinese haven't concocted some kind of new "thin water". Nah, though I'm sure the new technology in costumes help somewhat.

    - I've finally watched some of the much-controversially-discussed women's gymnastics as GB's Beth Tweddle was in action in the a-bars final. It was a rather surreal scene as she and Nastia Liukin seemed to have bypassed the Olympic venue and wandered into a creche.

    - I find the Modern Pentathlon a sadly undercovered event full of remarkable sportspeople. Rather than time-trials and races - essentially all tests of physical prowess - like the decathlon; the pentathlon requires this plus other styles of sporting test - a one-on-one combat event (fencing), a test of nerves under pressure (shooting) and the improvised skills of the equestrianism (they are only assigned their horses the day before the event).
